Aircraft weights and measures question?

Post by col1948 »

I hope this isn't a daft question, but something that has puzzled me for ages.

Just for example, if I download aircraft (X) and look in the weights section then download aircraft (Y) then download aircraft (Z) all the same type of aircraft but the weights are all different from each other.

There have been times when again for example aircraft (X) doesn't fly right so I've swapped the CFG contents keeping the contact points and lights sections for aircraft (Y), also swapped the air file to match, and it flew better.

So again a daft example but lets say Aircraft (X) is a heavy type plane and I swapped the cfg and air file for a lot lighter aircraft why won't it fly, my way of thinking is, if I've told the sim that aircraft (X) isn't a heavy anymore why does it not show or if it does it bounces about then vanishes, is there other things in the actual model telling the sim it isn't a light aircraft but a heavy?

You can tell I'm no model maker, I admire you guys who have the skills, I'm too old to learn now.

There could be a number of reasons but it all comes down to balance.
I have stated on several occasions that an fde is a balancing act, and it truly is.

Whilst the simplest solution is to swap the air and cfg files over and keep the original contact points and lights sections that quite often isn't enough. However, both fdes have to be balanced at the same place.
Now the balance is often down to the modeller and how they laid down the original drawings.

It simple terms if both planes are balanced at the same point what you did in essence will work.
If they are not then you will have to amend several parms in the new fde to set it to balance in the same place as the original fde.

So in short there is nothing in the model. You can make a Tiger Moth handle like a Mustang if you have have the balance right in the fde.
My guess that this is what is wrong in your current situation. Balance.

Thanks Steve, I was more asking in general than any particular aircraft, funny though I did do a swap recently with a lighter aircraft and changed the cfg from a heavier one and it flew great, before it was shaking and bouncing with the ones supplied.

If it's bouncing and shaking, then the Moments of Inertia (MOI) values are probably out. That's another set of variables to add to the balancing act.
