Buying new lap top

Post by miljan »

Well as I have FSX fr some time and never really tried it I decided to relax this Christmas with it.I was so excited but then I realized that my old i5 2.5GHz is not enough and now I am searching for new LapTop that will allow me playing fsx with good fps.
My candidate is
Lenovo Z50-70 (Intel Core i7-4510U 2.0 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, NVIDIA GT840M 4 GB)
or
Lenovo Y50 Laptop, Black, Windows 8.1, Core i7, 8GB RAM, 15.6 inch, 1TB
Any suggestions,what to consider etc?

Thank you and Merry Christmas!

FSX likes fast clock speeds, so go for the fastest processor you can...
Also look carefully at the graphics card.. though FS doesn't put too much load on it, you really need a good (probably nvidia) dedicated graphics card.

I run an i5 @ 2.5Ghz with a 540M card, and when tweaked properly FSX runs fine on it ;-)

miljan,

If you don't already have it, get NVIDIA Inspector and go to the following links for guidance on how to optimize the settings:

Nick Needham did the FSX Guide and he really knows his stuff.

A much needed stuff Mike.I am still tweaking the things and got frustrated with fps 16-20 on some light scenery liko one for LYBE and still I didn't load LOWW to sim :S
As usual for law tops seems that CPU is weak even with boost to 3.5.

    miljan,

You are running an updated (specs wise) gaming laptop like my ASUS that I run FSX and other sims on (Falcon BMS,DCS series). i7 8gb RAM, GTX 460M 1gb. I'm only running the framerate limiter from the VRS Tacpack, otherwise locked at 30fps for AI.

Big thing I learned later after installing FSX-Gold was to install to the C: drive vice the standard path (C\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\x. If/when I get a new machine I will go with some of the guides that are out now.

Did you try this for some fsx.cfg changes:

    http://www.venetubo.com/fsx.html

Make sure you do the "Himemfix" fsx.cfg edit as well.

When I made my fsx.cfg with venetubo my fps didn't change but following links than Mike provided I reached satisfying 19 to 30 fps.Still i need to change few more things. As it is UHD i have reduced screen resolution to 1900x something :? And it gave me few frames more.Running on full resolution makes fsx window so small that you need magnifier to read it.
