My guess is that it won't take you more than an hour, the whole thing.

The key thing is that you have copies of all your cfg files on your desktop. Remember that you don't just copy them back as you don't know what is different between the versions you will need to copy back things that you have added, like addon scenery into your scenery.cfg (that probably has not changed but a compare will tell you) and your joystick settings in your FSX.cfg.

OK so after your install of FSX, you started one flight and then ended the flight and exited OK.

Next you installed SP1 This was followed by another started flight followed but the flight being ended.

Finally, SP2 fails to install.

Is all this correct?

The reason for the flights, just start a default aircraft at the default airfield take off and immediately throttle back and land again, is that this sets up the final parts of the cfg file.

So when did you start rolling back the files from your saved installation? You said that you were doing that?

One final question, what error(s) are you getting for the install?

Out of complete boredom I looked for the patch and found the following installation instructions on the MS site :-

Download the service pack to the existing Flight Simulator X installation.

The service pack is one download per supported language. It detects Standard versus Deluxe SKUs and installs appropriately.

Your Flight Simulator X installation must have all original files unchanged: a repair may be necessary if you have changed any files.

Did you run the SP2 patch from the FSX folder?

Are you currently at a clean SP1 state? If so are you running the SP2 update from the FSX folder?

Also try running it as an administrator.

My thing here is that if you are a clean SP1 then you shouldn't need to repair.

One other thing to try, and this is because the patch was released to run on Vista, that if you are using Windows 10 trying running the patch in compatibilty mode as well.

As in SP1 added in successfully and just the one flight to activate the update. Nothing else done.

OK so please confirm that you have the fsx_sp2_ENU.msi in your FSX folder, AND that you have made it run as an Administrator AND you have set the compatibility mode for Vista.

reading thru all this makes me convinced this is a registry issue...I seem to recall years ago I faced a similar issue..cant remember if it was sp2...but after deciding to reinstall from scratch...I had real issues reinstalling fsx along with service packs. I was using fsx gold or whatever it was called and I found a forum somewhere that guided me in removing every hidden registry entry that was left behind after uninstalling...something there was preventing the service pack to install...im not 100% sure...but after all Mr Boafs troubles...id ditch the whole thing...uninstall...delete everything as far as the eye can see and route out every registry entry...then id start slowly from scratch...and I mean slowly MrBoaf.
install FSX....start it up...activate it as per normal....start a flight and then stop...at this stage...look at the about tab to verify what state your fsx is presently at....sp1 etc.
if at sp1...
download correct sp2 and install as per instructions...preferably as administrator and while its installing...touch NOTHING. Don't even look at your screen....walk away....make a coffee...take dog for walk....anything...this way we know the system has been left alone to install.
upon return..hopefully be presented with a sp2 installed successfully message....

good luck..

if all else fails....delete fsx...install train sim

found on another site....read carefully....

you must perform a clean install and THEN FLY 1 flight before exit(*to set a program flag that the system worked). THEN, you install SP1 and THEN FLY 1 flight (*again, to set a program flag that the system worked and is updated). Then, you should be able to install SP2.

Very similar to what you said, i found a thread today that had exactly his error.

What the problem was, he eventually found, was that although he uninstalled FSX it left behind 1.5GB of files. It seems that it will quite happily re-install FSX and even SP1 but SP2 will fail. My guess is that because SP2 patches both versions available at that time it checks for an EXACT match for aircraft and files, as each version was different, and IF it can't find an exact match (i.e there are extra files) it will rollback and fail.

So in essence, you need to uninstall FSX. Once done check the location you installed it, and if there is still a directory with files in you must delete that completely.

Then and only then can you start that install progress again, following the instructions that Trev and myself gave.

In essence, with the exception of your FSX backup, throw away all files pertaining to the current FSX installation. Keep nothing and mod nothing UNTIL SP2 has installed and the flight made.

Yes indeed. That if the worst comes to the worst you can go back to where you started, which would be SP1 but you would have all your mods in place.

That is why i said remove everything FSX with the exception of your backup.

HOWEVER, what I have noticed is that you are trying to paint schemes and test aircraft in FSX. They are addons, you have to get rid of everything.

Until you solve the SP2 issue everything else is pointless, do you not understand the meaning of a clean system? I asked you if you had a clean SP1 and you said yes when it obviously is not the case.
