Post by volador »

So sad to inform that a KC-130R Hercules serial number 990 of the Chilean Air Force, that had taken off from Chabunco Chilean Air Force Base, near Punta Arenas City at 16:55 local time (19:55 GMT), lost contact at 18:13 (21:13) this monday 9, en route Marsh Chilean Air Force Base in the Antarctica, and was reported missed.

Those missing include 17 crew and 21 passengers: 1 woman and 37 men (35 military and 3 civilians). Among the civilian was an university student who was going to the antarctica to a thesis work.

They were travelling to provide logistical support to Presidente Frei base on Antarctica's King George Island. A search-and-rescue mission is under way.

The Hercules did not activate any distress signal. The pilot and the Aircraft Commander had extensive experience and had recently participated in the exercise Mobility Guardian 2019, at Fairchild AFB.

An air force statement said that the plane was about 450 miles (725km) into its 770-mile journey when contact was lost, placing it within the Drake Passage.

Remains were found today wednesday, 30 kilometers south of the last contact. and could correspond to foam from the wing of the lost plane.

The Hercules is one of four KC-130R that had been acquired in 2015 by the Chilean Air Force. The 990 was the former U.S. Marine BuNo.160628, and former USAF Ser.77-0324.
