texture size

Post by Bosshogg »

Does it make any difference to have various bmp texture sizes in Fs9? I am seeing 1mb, 1.33.mb and 4mb. Asking to see if it can cause CTD due to this issue. Thank you.

These are simple guides.
1MB textures are 1024x1024 16bit textures and are perfectly satisfactory.
1.33MB textures are 1024x1024 16bit textures WITH mipmaps and are perfectly acceptable.
4MB textures are 1024x1024 32bit textures and are perfectly acceptable.

There is a however. Some people have had crashes with 32bit textures on their systems and swear off them. Some people say that the textures are fine on their systems and cause no crashes.

I would say that IF an aicraft texture is causing you and issue then it is likely to be a 32bit texture. If you are in any doubt you can copy the 32 bit textures somewhere safe and convert them to 16bit (DXT3) textures using the freeware DXTBmp util.

OK thanks for the reply. Are 5.33mb textures also OK for fs9?

It absolutely depends.
If it is a 1024x1024 32 bit texture with mipmaps then it should be OK.

However, that size also corresponds to a 2048x2048 16 bit texture with mipmaps. FS9 will not load textures greater than 1024x1024 under any circumstances. If you have any of those you will need to alter the textures down using one of various utils.

If you can't work out/don't know what the size is use DXTBmp and load it up. It will tell you in the title bar.
