John's Junk

Post by JohnTenn »

Folks

I am starting this thread because it appears there are some of you out there who are prepared to use Afcads, paints, and sceneries,
that are perhaps "sub-standard", for now until something better comes along.

I have started and not finished "projects" while I should have been doing something else. In my search for information I stumble on pictures and ideas which lead me on another path.

The result is, mostly due to the fact that I am not very competent at painting things unless it is a very good colouring-in book, that I leave projects un finished and often forget about them.

My hope is that these files can be shared and improved on by the community so that we might all benefit.

Let us begin.

Jeez, that could have been me saying that :)

Appreciate the work.... Butterworth is going into the sim as we speak ;-)

Thanks John for sharing.

I had to laugh too. I'm always doing the same thing. I have a lot of good ideas (I think) but I can never manage to finish them.

I think that making these available is a good thing. I hope that it may inspire people that find painting easier to spruce up the objects here for the benefit of the community.
Sometimes it takes courage for people to take the first step and hopefully it encourages more people to try dabbling in creative ways.

Thanks John for dumping these here, just looking for WMKB as I finished putting in RMAF after seeing I didn't have anything in nearby Singapore! I initially was only going to add US based MAIW packages years ago, but slowly have expanded to almost all other armed forces. I'll PM you for the cool Cessna paint, seems many S. American forces use the HTAI payware models.

I'm in that boat Steve, all the tools but little time. Just have yet to step off the edge into the deep water.

You are welcome folks.

The one thing about creating stuff is that your project is going to go wrong at some stage.

I spent many hours as a youngster building models from plastic kits which I saved up to buy.
Taking huge chances was never an option. Where I grew up there were not many shops that sold kits and sometimes there were none left after you purchased yours.

The point I am trying to make, and I read it in a forum in my search for information, start your project with the intent of destroying it after you have finished. Make back-ups as you go along.
The idea is if you are not going to keep it you will take chances and progress in your skill base. I have found tutorials on the most random topics helpful because they put a different perspective on things.

Also the second time you make the same thing you have learned from the previous attempt so your technique is better.

I would have like better help files for the software though.

I also came across forums that even the esteemed John Young was a novice at some stage, but he was not shy to ask questions.

Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, "Anyone who has not made a mistake has never tried anything new".
And he also said, "In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure."

Have fun with this hobby.

Very well said John.

You can indeed only succeed by asking questions and learning new techniques. There's no single AI design Bible available, and it's why I joined MAIW. There's a fantastic knowledge base here and people in the know. I was into scenery design for many years and was scared of designing anything with a complex curve in it, until I had to make some static aircraft one day. After lots of experimenting it gradually became second nature. AI aircraft then followed quite naturally from that. I was scared of modelling helicopters for a long time too, until Mike Mac and Kevin gave me the FDE knowledge and XML code to do it.

Because things can certainly go wrong, including file corruption, I too keep many backups of each project, incrementing the Gmax file name by "1" before making a significant change, like cutting out wheel wells or doors. That way you also have some less detailed models available for later use in more distant LODs. I usually end up with around 30 backups for each project that are also copied to a portable hard drive for safe measure.

I usually finish what I've started, but I might make 3 or 4 attempts at the beginning to get the technique right for that model, discarding the earlier attempts until I have the plan that works.

I love John's Einstein quote. You certainly have to stick with it to succeed.

John and all using, small typo in the "sim=" section where the airfile name goes, has the ".air" left one, easy fix.

I didn't find the FPs, searching as I have a few of G. Luna's scenery working in FSX for other FAB bases, sadly none of the photoreal tiles.

Chris

Thank you for that.

The aircraft displays in my sim (FS9) despite the '.air' in the 'sim=' line.

My apologies, I have opened up a can of worms.
The scenery I have contains the scenery of SBYS and SBCO made for the Air Force Academy of Brazil.
The scenery was made by Gustavo Luna and included in the package with older versions of the Tucano.

I can not find my original download or the file reference.

I will try to make basic flightplans and post them below.

Thanks Chris

Positive spin off.

Scenery on Flightsim.com is way better than the one I had.

New .CFG entry with parking codes, AFA and '.air' removed.

Flightplans for 16 aircraft.
