DOL Kliniska
DOL Kliniska
My next project is something that was in my mind for quite a long time, though I did not expect to end up in Poland.
I is a highway strip, in Polish Drogowy Odcinek Lotniskowy.
During my research regarding the Polish Su-22s I found several photos of Fitters and other Polish Air Force jets operating from highway strips during exercises. These exercises were cunducted regularly until 2003 utilizing the highway strip east of Szczecin in the northwest of Poland - DOL Kliniska.
"... a 2 kilometer long and 16 meter wide stretch of national highway in a forest clearing of 60 meters wide.
The center of the runway was strong enough to carry a 30 tonne aircraft. ..."
(from http://www.forgottenairfields.com/polan ... -s627.html)
More information about DOL Kliniska including some nice videos can be found here:
http://www.forgottenairfields.com/polan ... -s627.html
http://theaviationist.com/tag/highway-strip/
There is also a 1970s Polish movie featuring flight operations on this highway strip.
DOL Kliniska was recently reopend in flight simulator....
approaching from Szczecin
looking east
highway junction (highway 6 / country road 142)
approaching from east
parking space on the eastern end of the runway looking northeast
parking space on the western end of the runway looking southwest
a lot of spotters getting picked up by the shuttle bus
the western parking space with seven parking spots for fighter aircraft
I have not found any evidence that transport aircraft operated from DOL Kliniska in the past.
However the Polish Air Force C-295s should be easily capable to do so. I added three parking spots for them.
the eastern parking space with parked C-295s and Su-22s preparing for take off
More screenshots showing flight operations to come...

I do believe this is the first time someone has done a highway strip. Those screenshots look great. Well done.

There is also highway strip in the Preschen scenery by Ian Elliot.clickclickdoh wrote:I do believe this is the first time someone has done a highway strip. ...
Now some AI traffic action
Mig-29s taxiing out from the western parking space
taxiing across the eastern parking space
Mig-29 airborne
F-16 leaving the western parking space
F-16s taxiing on the runway
F-16 airborne
F-16 aerobraking after touchdown
F-16 leaving runway while wingman is on final approach
Re: DOL Kliniska
Looking pretty damn cool, Hartwig. I have a faint hope of doing something similar for the highway stretch used by the Belarussian Air Force some day. Su-25, Su-27, MiG-29 and apparently also An-26 have all been seen doing landings and takeoffs there.

Re: DOL Kliniska
Are you using a custom texture for the 'runway' (if you will)? Or are you using 4 taxiways, each with one solid edge line and and one striped edge line, to mimick the highway markings?
Re: DOL Kliniska
You are right, the 'runway' is made of an apron with four taxiways on top to mimick the highway marking.
The piano keys on each end of the runway are also made of individual taxiways with 'ice' surface.
The runway object itself is only about one meter wide and hidden between the highway markings in the middle.
It took quite some time to align everything and make it look as it is now.

Re: DOL Kliniska
Ah, I've been playing around with it a bit, and it's one of those things where thinking it up is easier than putting it into practice. Very clever idea with the piano keys, I might have to steal that

Unfortunately due to their FS98 style absolutely unsuitable.
Some time ago it did this Swiss highway strip used beginning Seventies and located on highway A1 between Oensingen and Egerkingen.
