Naval Station Norfolk

Post by LEBTowerGuy »

Here is another project I have been working on as well. The Naval Base at Norfolk. This area includes Chambers Field, Helo squadron parking, and the helo airfield to the north. It also includes a coastline rendering of the port area as well. This is still very much a work in progress, but its comming along nicely...I think anyway.

Great work, Matt!

What about some carriers on the piers and some frigates?

Thanks Hartwig, I've been looking for the static carriers for a bit, I couldn't remember where I had seen them. Guess I should have looked in the obvious source first. I will definently add those.

Looks pretty good! A lot of the new construction is winding down. The New tower over by the marina is almost complete. Can't really see from the roadway the construction of the new hanger and apron to see how that is progressing. Need goggle to do another pass and update the pics again. :)

Thanks to hartwig for pointing out these fine libraries. I have now added all of the Nimitz and Perry Class ships assigned to Norfolk. The carriers have landable flight decks, and there will be one FFG in the bay with a landable helo pad as well. Done some more aligning of scenery around the base. All in all its comming along quickly. If anyone knows of any other libraries of naval vessels please let me know.

Would be great if somebody could do the helicopter landing marks on LHA's and LHD's on 9/27 like the carrier landing strips on the 10/28 runway.

Looking very good, Matt.

There are several AI Navy vessels available at http://www.fs-shipyards.com/
including
Nimitz class aircraft carriers
Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates
Ticonderoga class cruisers
Arleigh Burke class destroyers
Los Angeles class submarines

As these are AI ships you will need an AFCAD file and "flightplans".
(I think the same principle was used for the Humvees at the MAIW Nellis scenery.)

Before I started my Oceana scenery I was tinkering with NS San Diego.

So is anyone doing the ship markings yet, otherwise I would try my best?

I believe I got a few FP's for NS Norfolk from fs-shipyards, might be a good start once the scenery is complete.

Did some work in the naval yard area. I added 6 AI Tyco class crusers, as well as rescaled the Perry class boats as well.

Matt,
If you want to get the parking correct for the AI cruisers they moor down at Pier 2. Usually just 4 of them haven't seen them nest in all the time I have been stationed up here. If for some reason more than 4 are in then they will moor at Pier 4 or 5.

For all of the old timers out there who remember NOB in it's old days it would be Piers 21 and 24 and 25.

If you throw in the LA class subs they moor at Pier 3. Pier 3 can hold 6 subs.

Matt I have some low poly subs you can place as scenery if you want them.

EDIT: Try these.

Thanks mike, I will put those in as well. Les, thanks for that info, I am still working out the placement of things, right now I am working with just basic parking for the AI vessels that I can find. Once I get those worked out, I will start assigning parking locations for the boats. Does anyone have a copy of the AI Burke Class destroyer, it was removed from fs-shipyards and I can't seem to locate it.
