MAIW Team - Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker

Post by gsnde »

I think that the metallic polished effect is not as prominent in FSX as it is in FS9 with Mark's marvelous texture (see his screen shot here). Is there anything I can do to achieve this in FSX as well?

Nice screen shots Martin. Unfortunately FSX reflective texturing is only achieved with quite a complex array of parameters that have to be set in the model file, using FSX materials.

Thank you, John. I have feared it would be impossible. Still Mark's paints looks stunning in FSX.

Martin, just having another look at the shots you posted. There appears to be some reflection present. I assume you are using the FS9 .bmp textures rather than .dds (you need the source file to change to .dds). Try opening the FS9.bmp file and darken the alpha channel a tad. That might give you what you want.

Thank you John, I will try this after work and will report back. Would the usage of DDS format also help to improve the metallic effect?

Martin

How do you get these shots on AI planes?

Martin, for .dds textures to work, they usually need to be enabled in the FSX model (they do in Gmax for sure) with quite a few settings. If by chance they do function without converting the model, note that .dds textures need to be flipped upside down, including the alpha channel if it has any masks in it.

dk1213, I think Martin is using a traffic viewer to take his screen shots. There's one in the FSX SDK (Traffic Toolbox) I think.

You won't believe how long I am trying to get some good refuelling shots. It is frustratingly complicated. These are obviously not yet what I am looking for, but anyway....

Harder than it looks isn't it Martin.

I made a video a couple years back with FAF Mirages refueling behind a tanker. I used the Recorder module to record all of it then swapped in the AI models.

Is that how you're doing it??

No, not FSRecorder, Mike. Three dummy airports and AIFP like usual....

You might want to try my AI Reference. You should find all of Marks models and paints there.
