Hi, My PC (Windows XP Home 32 Bit) has just gone tits up, so its off to the repair shop on Monday, so if its a lost cause, I am looking for opinions as to if I should upgrade to eg Windows 7?
For some time I have been considering backing up FS9 onto an external HD, but failed to do it. So if every thing is lost looks like a rebuild. I have lot of stuff on Disc, can they be used on a Windows 7 system.
In the mean time keeping everything crossed.

I only recently had to to change to Windows 7 from XP and didn't really find a problem, even with the x64 version. Addon programs might be more problematic, but some of these have workarounds, like ACM.
What I would do though, is make sure you can get 7. If you buy a new PC the chances of you getting 7 is remote now. Building your own is fine as long as you get the 7 installation disk.
Hopefully you say a lot of stuff is on disks that you mean CD's. if so then you will have no problem reading the disks.

Many thanks for response, would you beleive it but I am replying using my PC, so I think that I might be lucky and just have an intermittant fault. Will find out on Monday.

Maybe it's an overheating thing.
A member of this forum had a problem a few years ago when he thought his graphics card was blowing up. I suggested that he check the motherboard and card and effectively dust it.
What he found was that his cards fan was clogged up so it kept quitting on him. A good but careful vacuum solved the issue and it was as good as new and running a lot cooler.

Collected PC today, A OK, needed a good clean also something was overheating so that has been sorted, certainly working a lot faster now.Next step is an external HD, any recomendations?

Well a simple copy is the obvious answer.
The thing that you must take into account is that menu items will need to have their properties altered to point to the new location. Also you will need to alter the registry settings to point to the new place. A tool like Martin's ADE-check will probably help there. The final problem is that you may find that you have third party addons that need to be altered as they may store the location rather than use the registry entry.
If all this sounds a bit daunting there is another way.
Firstly take a complete duplicate of your FS folders and structure, and don't forget your files that are kept in the system places, like My Documents and AppData.
Then uninstall FS. Then re-install FS in the new location and then update it to FS9.1 .
Once this has been done you will have the registry pointing to the new place and so you can now copy your saved structure right over the top of the new installed structure.

Update. Have had to buy new PC, Windows 7 64 Bit.
Having loaded all FS9 data onto my External HD as per instructions found here and Avsim.
Can anybody please give me the detailed instructions on how to load onto new PC, in simple terms as I am not exactly up to speed on this sort of action. Something to do with my age I expect.

Simply put you need to install FS9 on the new 'puter. Then load the FS9.1 update. Then simply load all of your saved FS9 installation over the top with a simple copy, not forgetting your FS9.cfg file into it's new location.
Then you will have a working dupe of your last backup.

Update to FS9.1.(where can I obtain this)
Load saved data on External HD over the top of step1.

Am up and running with FS9 at last, it has loaded into Programme Files X86. I find that in comparison to XP moving files around are a pain in this system. My new system CPU is supposed to be 87% faster than the one in my old XP system yet loading FS9, selecting the various elements and then coming out take a very long time!!
