RAID 1 Setup

I just added a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device to my home network. I am running a RAID 1 (mirror) set-up with two 1TB drives. The drives just drop into the NAS with no tools and was very easy to prepare. So far I have been impressed with the speed and access this device is giving me. I have been moving everything from USB external HDs to the NAS for the last three days. So far I have used about a quarter of the space, and I think I will have plenty of room to expand with it. Was very simply to set-up and add to the network.

I also upgraded my router to N, went wireless on a multifunctional printer and added a keyboard and mouse to my main system. Next will be a new graphics card. Now I can work FS from my laptop and not always on the main system.

I got the WD Bookworld 1TB ethernet connection NAS. Works well with Twonky and for streaming to XBOX360/PS3/Media devices.
NAS is the way to go.

I think that you are right, Barry. What troubles me a touch is the cost of anything but a basic box. I had a look at the model that flyboy mentioned and saw that there is a version that will also handle a network printer attached to it, but the extra cost involved is stupid.

This is the card I ended up with: EVGA GeForce GTS450 SuperClocked 1 GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card. I hope it does the job for a year or so.

Wireless printers are cheap these days. I got an hp one for under £100 over here.
It even supports apple air printing. So can print from iPad or iPhone over LAN


Been using windows media center past week. Having a play with it
I tell ya it's not bad at all on win7 to xbox360. Does stream conversion etc

Useful to know, Barry. Trouble is I have a network printer, and I don't need to replace it.

It is really a needless expense if you take into consideration the cost of the NAS+drives.
