LONDON (AP) — A senior Royal Air Force official says cutbacks to the U.K.'s fast jet capability could leave the country vulnerable to a Sept. 11-style attack.
Air Marshal Timo Anderson told parliamentarians Tuesday that high-end aircraft such as Tornados and Typhoons are critical to the nation's air defense.
In comments reported by The Daily Telegraph and confirmed by the Ministry of Defense, Anderson said the military would not be able to respond effectively to an air terror attack if those defenses were compromised.
Britain's military faces deep cuts as the government struggles to contain the country's ballooning deficit. Last week Prime Minister David Cameron called some aircraft Cold War relics.
