Victors and Canberra (Marham)

Post by John Young »

Thanks everyone for your suggestions for a retro AI model to make next. I'm glad the Victor K2 was a popular choice. I have made a start and the primary model is now built. It's been great fun to do:

The shots are in Gmax and the model is not yet textured. Poly count (mesh triangles) is currently 8858 including the GSE temporary parts, plus 548 for the brake chute which is only drawn on 1 landing aircraft of course. I'm not too worried about the count for LOD_400 because the next LOD down will have a lot of opportunity to reduce the detail. Obviously 2 sets of 18 wheels (still and blurred) doesn't help. In fact they account for 2000 of the polys.

My plans are to make the K2 part of a wider package of FS9 and FSX Victors, including the anti-flash white B2 with and without Blue Steel. I am also intending to make some Canberras to make up the squadrons for a slightly retro version of my RAF Marham scenery. I'll do that for 1993 just before 55 Sqn disbanded but at a time when Tornado GR1s were operating from the HAS sites.

I was thinking about having the refuelling hoses reel out with a piece of custom xml code set to trigger between say 10,000 and 20,000 feet. Users could then intercept the tanker (using a panel mounted radar) if it was placed on a flight plan from A to B with the flight level set to 15,000 feet. I think that would work.

Next job though is to map out the texture sheet...........

That has got to be one of the most sinister looking aircraft ever made. Retro or not, that will be cool to have in the game.

It looks really good. I like the idea of making the Blue Steel version.

The Canberra could almost be a Mike Pearson sort of project with the number of different versions.

So what's the story behind the tan color of that bomber?? Was it always painted in that color or what??

:) Mke they started off in an all white anti flash paint then to the standard grey/green cammo, the tan colour i'm not sure why or when, but nimrods, Victors, canberras and VC-10's went over to this paint scheme early 80's I think?
