V-22 Osprey

Post by John Young »

This should please 397 people who voted for the fourth most wanted AI aircraft at The Owl’s Nest.

Probably the most complicated aircraft I’ve built so far, certainly in terms of animation – the CV-22B and MV-22B Osprey:

Image

There are 9 models, each with a 4 stage engine tilt from 0 degrees to 90 degrees that’s triggered by the forward speed of the aircraft, with a vertical lift and descent. In addition there are 4 choices of cold parked states that can be assigned easily in the aircraft.cfg file:

- Engines up
- Engines down
- Wings and engines folded:
- Blades folded.

Image

15 minutes before departure, the animation trigger puts the model into the engines up position ready for taxi and take-off:

There are 4 scenarios in the pipeline:

1. The 352nd SOG at Mildenhall in the UK is all done:

Thanks to Tony Dalton for allowing me to amend his AFCAD in his Mildenhall scenery and for letting me provide a copy of the file in my package. The flight plans are also done.

2. For the US Marine Corps MV-22Bs, Brent has been busy building a brand new scenery for Futenma in Japan to accommodate VMM-262 and VMM-265. He is also setting up a number of associated landing zones for the aircraft. I’m sure he will show you more in his Japanese Bases thread. The 24 Ospreys for his scenery are all done.

3. I’m also going to utilise the existing MAIW Miramar scenery that already has parking for MV-22Bs. At the moment I’m intending to create 12 Ospreys each, with flight plans, for VMM-163, VMM-268 and VMM-764.

4. Finally, I have also produced the “Presidential” MC-22B that fits nicely with my White Hawk and Sea King:

Brent, as always, is rising to the challenge and is exploring something potentially interesting involving all 3 Presidential types.

I’m intending to make FSX versions of the Ospreys too. However there is a limitation. I think the engine tilt animation will work for flight, but it’s probably not possible to create the 4 parked states. In FS9 the Nav light comes on 15 minutes before departure and that’s the trigger for the parked animation. In FSX the Nav lights come on only at departure and that’s too late. The aircraft will move off before the engines are up and the rotors will cut into the ground until the rotation lifts them clear. We may be stuck therefore with just the engine up parked state. We have found no other xml trigger so far that works before departure in FSX unfortunately. Kevin is a wiz with this stuff however and hopefully we may yet find an FSX trigger.

I’m away for a week from Saturday, but I’ll press on with the project again when I get back.

I'm just going to leave this right here...

Yes, it's terrible low quality because I reduced the resolution and frame rate to keep the video small enough to email to John. But if you wan to see early testing of an AI V-22 landing on a simulated LHD, there you have it.

Appalling displays of emotion from Jim and Steve. Not very British. I will display true British calm by simpy stating, very nice, very nice indeed.

Recently when we were chatting you mentioned that you are working on some model but I didn't expect this.

Looking great, John.
I had always hoped that you would take the challenge to do the Osprey.

Just in case I missed something:
the Sea King model is not released so far?

I don't think it is Hartwig. I gave it to Lewis a while back with a view to releasing it. Watch this space though.

WOW! That is very cool. I didn't think a AI V-22 would get done because of the complicated animations. And just a few days ago I fixed up my AFCAD for my Futenma scenery (Overland payware scenery).
