Hadn't thought of an Islander, but it's now on the list as a possibility.

For a future suggestion; maybe a Grumman S-2 Tracker as there don’t seem to be any models for the type.

Re: Thoughts on the next project

Post by John Young »

I'm just researching the Gazelle with the intention of making some UK ones and the Balkan ones that Miljan requested. The UK, I think, had 4 types:

AH1 (Army Air Corps and Royal Marines)
HT2 (Royal Navy)
HT3 (RAF)
HCC4 (RAF)

Scramble lists 20 remaining AH1's in AAC service and none in RAF/RN service. I have cobbled together the production serial numbers for the 4 types and found that there were, 209 AH1's, 36 HT2's, 34 HT3's and 4 HCC4's.

My next step is to whittle that list down by removing the attritions in the earlier years. I wonder though if anyone has a year book that has the UK Gazelle serials for a time, perhaps a few years before RAF/RN retirement. I don't know what that year is I'm afraid, but I am looking for a period where the numbers to paint are manageable.

Yes quite possibly. Stephen has just sent me information on the current UK registered Gazelles. so I may well do a few of those too.

I just want to scope the retro element first.

I'll control all this because I find other serials not listed here.

Four versions of the Gazelle helicopter are in use with the ALAT.
The SA342M is equipped with HOT anti-tank missiles,
the SA342L1 or Ma is equipped with Mistral air-to-air-missiles ,
the SA342M1 is the Viviane version
and the SA341F is a general liaison helicopter, sometimes armed with a cannon.

That's a job and a half there, particularly to make and test the 4 overlaid helicopter AFCADs in 3 sim versions, on top of all the painting. I'm not committing to all of those, but I'll see how it's going after the UK examples. At the moment I just can't find out when the last of the RAF Gazelles retired. Miljan will paint the SOKO examples, once I have made the models.

The RAF got rid of its Gazelles in or around 2008. There were only 14 of them. The Army still runs them, and they're projected to remain in service until 2025.

Hi John

I have copies of Military Aircraft Markings for 1986 and 1998. These list all the aircraft serials together with where they were based and which unit operated them. I can send you copies of the relevant pages if they are of any use.

If you need any help with painting the aircraft I should be able to help in the new year.

If that's not too many pages for you to copy, the 1998 figures would be great. That's not too far off the retro years we have been using for other projects. Thanks for that and the offer to paint.

John
