AH-1S Cobra and AH-1Z Viper (Super Cobra_

Post by John Young »

For those reading the C-2 thread and eager to know what comes next, I can now say that there was one right guess although paired with another possibility.

I'm working on the AH-1S Cobra's of the JGSDF to go with scenery being updated by Brent. I'm also intending to make the AH-1Z Viper (Super Cobra), the latest variant in service with the USMC. These will be destined for Camp Pendleton. These will be for FS9, FSX and P3Dv4.

The following screen shots of the AH-1S are from FS9 and is a single LOD model and paint, at the moment:

There's still a way to go yet. Apart from the AH-1S LODs, there are 36 more paints to do plus the separate sim conversions. I'll then move on to do the AH-1Z's.

Wow ...

John's ability is truly wonderful and amazing.

The ROKARMY also operates about 70 AH-1S/F units.

I'll try painting it after a long time.

Awesome.

Many thanks..^ ^b.

I'll certainly have a look at other variants once I have the "S" and the "Z" done. The good thing about models like this is that there are not the heaps of parts like gear legs, wheels, gear doors and flaps/slats/spoilers that require a lot of animation work, especially in FSX/P3D. The rotors are of course animated, as are the crew heads. The animated lift is quite straight forward and because it's not huge, the helicopter stays put in a traffic viewer window. Just as a little bonus, the gun swivels from side to side and up and down above 500ft radar altitude.

Outstanding, John! Can't wait to have them buzzing around Camp Pendleton! I'd love to see the "G" model done someday. You know, the original Cobra that went to VietNam in '68.

Thanks again!

Another peak at Johns AH-1S, this time a training aircraft at Akeno, with the 5th Anti-Tank Helicopter Squadron behind it.

Just a quick update. I have the USMC AH-1Z model made, painted and tested in FS9. It's such a different model compared to the AH-1S, most of it I had to build from scratch. Next job is to make the LODs and then convert for FSX/P3D. Following that, 60 are destined for Camp Pendleton, San Diego, so there's some more painting to come.

I'll post some screen shots when I have the FSX versions.

I'm also pleased to report that the AH-1S models are working well in Brent's 3 JGSDF sceneries (Kisarazu, Kasumigaura and Akeno) in FS9, FSX and P3Dv4.

Thanks Andy. I am aware of the wide use of the AH-1, both currently and historically. The effort required to make/paint/flight plan them all is not something I want to take on. The only user on that list that I'm actively considering at the moment is the Republic of Korea and even then I might rope Mins into that one if he is able to. I'll be providing a paint kit though if other people want to venture further.
