Aerospatiale Gazelle

Post by John Young »

I have the base modelling done for the Gazelle. This one, when it's mapped and painted, will be the present day British Army AH1 with two variations - one with the FLIR/mounting pole and one without.

Once I have those done I can then re-work the models to give:

- RAF/Royal Navy and Royal Marines examples.

- 3 or 4 variations for Miljan who is going to pursue a SOKO package.

- Up to 4 French units.

A selection of present day Gazelles on the civil register.

I'm not planning on tackling any primary scenery, but I may well provide AFCAD helicopter overlays for airfields like Middle Wallop, Shawbury, Culdrose and the French airfields. Users can then adjust these to fit whatever underlying scenery they want to use. I may also provide some simple flight plans, also for users to tweak as they wish.

John , this looks outstanding. Better than I expected. What is the poly count at the moment?

Thanks Miljan.

The polygon count (mesh triangles) is 8536 with the FLIR and 7784 without it.

Bear in mind that the two pilots account for 1482 polygons. They and a lot of the detail in the helicopter itself will reduce quite drastically in LODs 3 and onwards in any case.

There's still lots of scope to add the weapons you want for the SOKO versions.

This is why I asked . My estimate is that additional 2000+ will be added with GAMA fully armed.

That's fine Miljan. Not all will be armed in any case.

I made a bit of a research regarding French army colors applied on gazelle. Did anyone manage to find some useful data?
617559
7F5F80
383838
this are some hex codes I found looking through decals and model kit paint producers.
Then later on, if someone wants to use paintkit:
Equador 1 FS24092 , FS24325, FS23814
Equador 2 FS24092, FS24159
Egypt FS33722

Thanks Miljan, that's very useful.

Just for the record:

Hex 617559 = RGB 97 117 89
Hex 7F5F80 = RGB 127 95 128
Hex 383838 = RGB 56 56 56

John Tenn pointed to me in a message that brown color might not be the right one. I suggest you check with him.
I am always making my paints based on available data and epaints for a reference to avoid different shades.

These are the first 3 Gazelle models - the AH1 (with and without FLIR) and the RAF HT3. 7 LOD models for FS9, FSX and P3D. Screen shots are in FSX:

The two AH1's are sharing a serial number for now (one of 4 for Manfred's RAF Bruggen). I can't find any real physical differences in the RN/RM examples, so I will use the HT3 for those paints unless anyone advises otherwise. I wasn't intending to make the RAF VIP HCC4 - there was only one of those apparently.

Next job is to make 4 SOKO-built models for Miljan to work with. I'll then have a look at the French models.

Very nice indeed! It will be good to give the Islanders/Defenders at Aldergrove some company.
