Ellington AFB(KEFD)-Houston TX

Post by GZR_Sactargets »

Ellington has become one of my favorites. There is an older Scenery set for it but I have problems with taxiways disappearing there. Ellington has Texas ANG, Texas Army Helos, USCG Station with Helos, All kind of NASA operations, and even Drones. One of the most complex operational Airfields I know of. Would make a great scenery set as it supports lots of other places. (Patrick, Langley, Edwards, Ft Worth-Jrb, to name a few). Here are some URLs that would support building a scenery set and AI traffic.

My army national guard unit used to be based out of there. We lived very close...my wife worked at NASA at the time. I have jumped into Ellington many times.

Geronimo!! I have two sons living in Houston now. In fact will go down there the weekend of the 18th of Oct. Looking forward to the trip. I have never been out to the airfield, but I also have a friend who lives on the downwind leg of the traffic pattern. :D

They just had the Wings over Houston airshow there last weekend. They had the Canadian Snowbirds perform. I couldn't go because we had my daughter's birthday party on Saturday.

Thanks Danny, A bit too far I think. Visiting family but only have 3 days and a day to visit an airshow wouldn't fly (pun intended).

If I was going to be in town or if you were going to be in Houston longer I would take you around town and see all the aviation sights. Make sure you give me a shout next time you are in town and we can work something out!

Thanks Dave, I appreciate the offer. I get down there about every 3-4 months but usually only over a weekend. I will let you know when I can spend a longer visit.

If you have the time, consider going to the Lone Star Flight Museum in Galveston. http://www.lsfm.org/ The web site does not do justice to the museum and it's collection of (mostly) flyable a/c. A great treat indeed!

Lone Star Museum has been on my list for several trips now. We did get out to the Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monument. Been to the Zoo and the Butterfly Gardens. The rest of the family has been to the NASA Museum, but I got sick on that trip and missed it.
Danny, I can only have one beer- But I have visited a lot of Resturants in Houston. My Daughter in Law grew up there and she knows all the great Spots. I like Ragin Cajun-until they moved their house was about a block away. Neilsen's Deli on Richmond was about 300 yards away. They have moved further out now-most due to Schools. My Grandsons are really bright (aren't they all?) and they were looking for good schools.
I went to Houston at about 5 weeks old. My parents made a trip for some reason. I have lived in Waco and Abilene during my AF Career so I am a Quasi-Texan. My son went to UT-Austin and I caught a few Football games. Gives me someone to root for since Nebraska is self-destructing.
GO HORNS!!

I'm an Aggie fan since my parents live in College Station but I will forgive all of you for being UT fans! I agree that Lone Star is a good museum, they even have a TB-58 there. It is the same aircraft that was out at Carswell for so many years. LSFM has a DC-3 in 40's COA colors, I have had a chance to fly that bird in cruise flight. I was hoping to go to the LSFM fly day they are having on the 10-11 Nov but we will be in Dallas that weekend. :(

There is also a new museum in the old Hobby terminal that has a lot of the airline history of Houston. I found it an intresting place to visit but I am an aviation nerd, LOL.
