This issue seems to exist in FS9 only. With FSX I don't see any jumps, bumbs, smokes or other strange behavior.

This is a repaint by Hartwig Ullrich that you can find at FlightSim. If you filter the AI Reference on my web for "create by" --> "HU" you will find his 9 F-14 repaints with download links

I've never messed with that proggy that makes aircraft models into static scenery models but I am guessing that if you were to use that program, you then lose the LODs on your aircraft models which means lower performance. IMO, it's better to use the actual AI models and flight plan them as static ...
