Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Hi Dean, Do I understand correctly that you're planning to make one large package containing the converted models for the F-14, F-5 and A-4 plus the converted retro Miramar scenery? Hi, Yes, pretty much. The TopGun package will be the same as the FS9 version but with everything updated for FSX in n...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Many thanks to John Young for allowing me to use the tower from his excellent MCAS Miramar scenery to upgrade the TopGun package Miramar. A few palms and a couple of stock FSX trucks added to give it a bit of life and the scenery for the package is now complete. The same tower has also been compiled...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Just updating the thread to keep everyone in the loop. I haven't done much on the project as I launched my first FSX airplane project ( RF-61C Reporter ) last week and have also been busy with work. The Tomcats are almost ready in P3D - I just have the animated afterburners to model in, which I'm fi...

Looks fantastic. When will the MAIW TOPGUN Miramar scenery for FSX be available for download?
The senior staff here are taking care of that as each conversion is received and tested - I'm sure they'll post here as soon as it's available for download.

MAIW TOPGUN Miramar scenery now working in Prepar3D v4 - buildings activated and visible, tower sorted and fire station plus a couple of palm trees and fire trucks added :)

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

A quick shot from P3D v4 showing Tomcats on the ramp. Canopy reflections and other factors are driving the need for a P3D specific model.

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

The conversion of Nick Black's F-14A to FSX native format is now complete! The airplanes also show up well in P3D but they will need their own conversion to account for afterburner effects, which is the next job on the list. MAIW Miramar will also be updated so that the scenery shows up in P3D , whi...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Interesting test, how many draw calls does the highest LOD have? Henk. According to MCX ( if I've read it right ) there are 83 draw-calls for the F-14 max LOD. These come from the single main texture ( 1.33MB ), plus a reflective and a specular, each of which are about 4kb. With the original models...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

A quick update: all F-14 versions ( fleet defence, max intercept ) etc have now been upgraded to FSX mdl standard. The LODs for each aircraft are now down to 3, and frame rates are a huge improvement. I'm not sure how many aircraft are visible in this screenshot, but with AI Traffic settings at 100%...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Hi folks, After much work, the F-14A is now working as a complete AI in FSX having been compiled as a native FSX model. All visibility features have been preserved or recreated from the original model. The airplane in the images is the "clean" model. Work will now continue to perfect the specular li...

Re: AI wing sweep XML

Just updating the thread here: the problem was indeed with FSDS in that a corrupted animation was blocking the compile in general. Once I located it, things started working better. I have to create parent parts for all animations on the F-14 but it will be worth it in the long run, as we'll have a s...

If I can be any help, let me know. Especially if you need my xml explaining.

Thanks Steve, I have a basic knowledge of XML coding and am learning fast but much of it is still a foreign language to me :)

I'll post an update once I figure out what the FSDS problem is.

Re: AI wing sweep XML

I've tried your code Steve and the result is the same. The code that I posted at the top of the thread was the one attached to Nick's original model on the wings. It does have that three-position sweep animation also, which ties in with the XML. However I don't think the code is the problem. I think...

Re: AI wing sweep XML

Hi Steve, I retrieved the XML from the F-14 wings and it was a MACH code as per the one I posted that was running the wings and glove vane animations. I don't think that the code is the issue as it all makes sense - I think that this is FSDS doing one and messing up the axis, despite the axis all be...

AI wing sweep XML

Hi folks, I'm sorting out the animations for Nick's F-14 to convert to FSX. There are some odd things happening: animations that run correctly in FSDS 3.5.1 are running in reverse in the sim. I've not encountered this before - I've had a look back through the threads and can't see any posts that hig...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

From what I understand is that the wet FS9 F-14 models and FDE are finished for years but have never been published. I remember several post by Mike about that. So no additional work on the models should be required. My question was about these models. Would they be made available for FS9 users whe...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

Will these legendary "wet" models of Nick's F-14s also be made available for FS9 users? These updated Miramar textures will also be available for FS9 users. As Steve says, the difference is in the FDE and also an animated tail hook and launch bar. I don't have the ability to compile for FS9 althoug...

Re: Nick Black's F-14 AI conversion project.

A very quick update regarding progress with the F-14. I've been very fortunate and am hugely grateful to Mike and to Hartwig; Mike has provided me with the source files for the F-14, both the dry models for F-14A, B and D, and the legendary but never seen "wet" model for carrier landings, which will...
