Bulldog SK 61

Thought I'd do the Bulldog in the markings of the first air force to use it, all were based with the Swedish Air Force Flight Academy (F 5) at Ljungbyhed, the 5 on the fuselage indicates this unit. These were originally designated SK 61A, later six were modified to carry a RB 53 wire-controlled Bantam missile on the starboard wing-tip for training purposes and designated SK 61B. These were to train AJ 37 Viggen pilots before using the advanced (and much more expensive) RB 05 attack missile. This model will also be modelled.

The Armen (Army), designated FPL 61C, used theirs for liaison, artillery spotting and tactical recon using a photographer in the third seat fitted to the SK 61 with the camera pointing through the opening lower part of the rear windows. This differed from the RAF version that had a fixed window. This will also be modelled with the "cameraman" present.

There will also be a ski version, these were used in the north of Sweden for pilot training by F5.

And here it is with skis. Only found one photo on the web of a SK 61 with skis so I modelled them on that. The skis were made to fit in place of the wheels so all SK 61s could use them for Northern Sweden operations.

And finally the SK 61B only six were converted to carry a single Bantam missile on the starboard wing-tip for pilot training. All that's left is to do the LODs and textures.

Dan

I'll need a snowy airbase for the ski equipped ones to use if you know of one.

Cheers

After having a quick look, I've found a pic of an SK61 on skis at Kallax & from what I can make out they were at Vidsel (not necessarily based there) at some point, both of which are in the north of the country. They're probably the best bet I would think. I'll keep digging.

How many have/are you going to put on Skis?

Hi Dan

Not that many, perhaps a max of six as they were used to train pilots for ski ops. As far as I can tell the Army didn't use skis but then again they may have done on winter exercises. But I guess they worked out of fields not fixed bases.

Thanks John,

I'll get my thinking cap on as to what to do with them.

Does anyone know if they used to land in remote areas of Sweden, & if so where.

Hi Dan

It seems the ski equipped air force SK61s used ESPA Kallax-Lula as a base during the winter months for training. I've installed the scenery but the runways are cleared to tarmac during winter so I think we need a special afcad that has a ski strip away from the main runways with parking spots by the snow runway. AFAIK only the air force training school used them and then only a small number. Seems they flew there and had the wheels replaced by skis. So wheeled versions would have flown from Ljungbyhed to Kallax and back. For FS9 it could be a weekly flight, of course the a/c concerned won't be able to change it wheels to skis....
