An almighty pilot and inspiration to generations of aviators. A man I would have loved to spend a warm sunny afternoon in a country pub garden with, hearing all of the amazing aircraft and adventures he would have had.
A great loss and hopefully he'll be looking down at all those trainee pilots as they take their first solo flight. R.I.P Sir!

If you have not read it then get a copy from ebay etc of his book "Wings on my Sleeve" a great read for anyone with an interest in aviation.
■Flew 487 different types of aircraft but that does not include various Mk's so Spitfire is listed once as aircraft type when in fact he flew many versions and the same with other types.

He had more carrier landings than any other pilot. A real gentleman. RIP "Winkle"

I used to love reading his articles in Air International every month about the aircraft he flew.
