Kawasaki P-1

While people here are working on scenery and flight plans to go with the Poseidons and Wedgetails, I thought I would press on with the third aircraft in the trilogy - the Kawasaki P-1. Here's some shots of the first test flight of the completed but un-textured first LOD:

Next step is to play with the FDE for a couple of days and then I'll move on to creating the texture sheet and mapping.

10 aircraft are in use by the JMSDF at Atsugi, including the red and white prototype that I'll also paint. I have a shot of that aircraft with a couple of missiles under the wings, so I'll include that model too.

The P-1 is rated for the US made AGM-84, AGM-65 and the Japanese made Type 91 (ASM-1C).

These computer renderings show all eight under wing hardpoints with pylons installed:

I have never seen more than two pylons installed though, usually with any ordinance being carried on the pylons just inside the inner pair of engines.

Interestingly enough, the bottom image also shows the IR turret extended, which is almost never seen in the real world due to it normally being in it's retracted/stowed position for takeoff and landing which is where most pictures are taken.

Thanks for the pylon information Brent.

If you look at my first two screen shots, you can see that the IR turret is only visible with the aircraft in the air. It's actually a very simple thing to do. The turrent has a c_gear (undercarriage) part name, but the animation is reversed so it's up when on the ground, but comes down when in the air.

It's details like that which I love. I still remember the "should I include the moving door that no one will ever see" discussion.

I'll have to get up to speed on the Kawi P1, but agree with click about the finer details in AI models.

Notice this one: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... n_2014.JPG
Showing P-1 with its US equivalent, the Boeing P-8 Poseidon. Very interesting.

Yup, the gigantic cockpit windows really make the plane look smaller than it is.

Yup.

Found this P-1 armed: http://i.imgur.com/Rd4DJYp.jpg
And a detail under the cockpit: http://www.jetwashaviationphotos.com/si ... %20(1).jpg what is it?

Top photo: AGM-84 Harpoon under the port wing and a test painted AMS-1C under the starboard wing. They were probably doing weapons carriage and separation testing.

Bottom photo: The internet ate it, but if you are referring to the gray rectangle under the cockpit, that is one of the side scanning arrays of the HPS-106 radar.

John Young strikes again. Looks awesome, after seeing the P1 in the flesh last year it really left an impression. A really graceful aircraft

I was always wondering why they go with 4 engines?

The Nimrod could shut two of its four engines down to increase its patrol range, maybe the P1 can do that? Now try doing that on a two engined aircraft!
