B-58 Hustler

The B-58 Hustler is coming on well. I have the first LOD done for 3 FS9 models featuring the two styles of PODs and an optional 4 x MK43 nuke load-out on the wing pylons. I'm also painting both the operational polished metal schemes and the R&D red and white over the polished metal:

My thanks to Mike Mcintyre for suggesting the starting point for the FDE and also for testing my end result.

The Hustlers of the 43rd Bombardment Wing are destined for an updated Carswell scenery from Brent. I have the first draft of that and it's looking good. More about that as soon as I have all the paints done and Brent has set up the aircraft.

I also have the LODs to make, plus of course, the FSX versions.

I remember reading many years ago that each B-58 cost the same as it's weight in gold

One of the most unique military aircraft ever built IMO. Right up there with the Avro Arrow.

It's great to see it come to life in AI form.

Thanks everyone.

The Hustler was not a difficult model to make, once I figured out how the gear leg movements happened in the real thing. Mike's F-15 FDE as the starting point for flight was a boon because it has an inbuilt 5 degree nose high landing, but a very stable circuit attitude. We couldn't push it to the 12 degrees nose high landing that is characteristic of a real Hustler, but +5 degrees will do nicely.

I'm also grateful to Giorgio, who sent me two very useful publications about the Hustler that answered a lot of my questions about the aircraft.

One of the perks of working with John while he develops his models: Testing at the newly revised Carswell AFB scenery

And the perk for me is to not have to worry about scenery too much and especially the flight plans. Brent has done a great job in providing a home for the Hustlers:

The FSX models and textures are all done. While Brent is working on the flight planning, I'm just about to start the manual.

Nice, I hope that the new Carswell can hosts also the B-36.

It can host a reduced number of them. All of the parking on the east side of the base is now set up for B-58s and B-52s, as were assigned at the time period being represented, but the west side with the Consolidated/Convair/General Dynamics/Lockheed factory still has the B-36 sized parking spots from the first release.

The B-58 Hustler and Carswell 1962 scenery packages are all done and have been sent for inclusion in the Download Hangar.

In addition to the standard B-58A (above), I have also made the TB-58A trainer version. This has the second cockpit moved forward for a second pilot. The additional side windows means that the national insignia is moved lower down the fuselage:

The files are named: JYAI_B-58_Hustlers_FS9_1.zip and JYAI_B-58_Hustlers_FSX_1.zip. The Paint Kit is: Paint_kit_JYAI_B-58s.zip.

My thanks again to Brent for making the scenery and flight plans, Mike M for help with the FDE and to Giorgio for some great reference material.
