Ahhh yes, three weeks in Deci every year for ACM.
The way I used to survive a trip to Deci in a Herk was wearing cold weather gear and lying flat out on top of cargo in the middle of the plane under the heater. Well that and having a walkman playing underneath the obligatory ear-defenders.

Was there at the start of the Falklands conflict. Interestingly different reactions from the other three nations using the base at the time. Think it was the same year that a German F-104 burst a tire when landing and skidded off the runway.

They'd have got a bit upset if I'd used the same technique of surviving the trip! But we did have a bunk in the flight deck. It was pretty rare for us to stay on base, though it was becoming more common after the big budget cuts of the early '90s. Prior to that we used to stay at the Hotel Moderno next to the station in Cagliari, and only a short walk from the seafront loggia of shops and restaurants. The coffee in the station cafe was legendary - and very necessary before the trip home!

As SLC we had to be more creative than the pampered guys up front . What is this "off base" that you speak of!

It's simple: the 61 ° Stormo which is based in Galatina, now has the MB339s for phase I and II, while the T-346s are for phase III and IV. Unfortunately the Galatina airport does not have infrastructures capable of managing the numerous training flights of the flight school, so they decided to divide it into two airports: the I and II phase remain in Galatina with the MB339s (soon they will be replaced from T345), while phase III and IV transferred to Decimomannu, which will start at full capacity from 2022, after the infrastructure adaptation works will be completed.
