On the plus side, we only need one paint per model if, as I've read, the serial number is removed.

Jeez, i never thought that the USAF would ever copy the RAF in paint jobs.

I have to think though that there has to be some identifying marks somewhere or a crew would have difficulty finding their aircraft. For the maint guys it would be a nightmare maintaining records without them.

Perhaps this is to do with surveillance improvements? The older large markings made it easy for "the enemy" to count the numbers in fleets and where they were based, and they gradually became less obvious to the point where now they need to be disidentified completely. There'll be markings inside wheel wells or something along those lines, is my guess.

There are some airfields where the apron surfaces are camouflaged as disruptively as the planes that park there in order to throw a spanner into any attempted "head count". Maybe that will make a comeback.
