Forum Search

Post by gsnde »

Greg,

I have a problem wioth the forum search and I don't know if it is me or the search settings.

If I search for F-111 this is the result

Code: Select all

The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: F 111.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 4 characters and must not contain more than 84 characters excluding wildcards.
If I search for "F-111" this is the result (it seems to strip out the hyphen):

Code: Select all

Search found 0 matches: "F-111"
Searched query: +"F 111"
Basically you can't search for any aircraft, which is a bit counterproductive in terms of what MAIW is about... :smt001
Cheers,
Martin

In general, in any forum, it's impossible to search word less than 3 letters. When you search F-111 or F-xx, the - is not recognise, so F is only one letter

I know. But that is due to the configuration how the forum search is setup. It is about the size of the search index and performance. My point is that in this forum not being able to search for aircraft is hitting back especially bad. A bit experimenting with the parameters could be in order though....

Hey Martin,

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much I can do in phpBB. The search script is built-in and doesn't offer many parameters to be changed. The "-" character is also used for another logic so that complicates things.

I'm investigating if there are any plugins that enable an alteration of the search behaviour but for now, I don't have a solution.

Could you make it so we can search for something on the main forums page? Earlier I was trying to search for JMSDF C-130 paints and I didn't know which forum to search in. If I could of searched for that from the main forums (instead of going into say the paint shop forum) I think it would of been a bit easier.

You can, Joseph. Go to "Quick Links" -> "Search" in the top-left corner.

I have tried to search for topics the predate the move to the new format.

Very few, if any, posts are returned.

It appears that only posts on the new format are found.

Could there be a reason for this?

Try searching for Lossiemouth for instance.

I noticed that, too. Search for user-id works. Not so for topics and text. Could not find any of my old screenshot posts via search.

My fault. I forgot to recreate the search index after trying out another search plugin.

This should be fixed now.
