Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
It might be a little premature to model an aircraft not yet in service, but the Boeing KC-46A model provides a good basis for 3 other Boeing 767 military derivatives, albeit with different engines - the KC-767A, KC-767J and the E-767 AWACS, that are all in service now. I thought there was merit in giving them a go:
The 3 tanker models are in two forms – with and without animated cargo and hold doors, making 7 models in total with 15 paints.
The aircraft make use of existing scenery available here at MAIW. There are separate models in FS9 and FSX native code.
The KC-46A was selected by the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2011 as the winner of the KC-X tanker competition to replace older KC-135 Stratotankers. The first 18 combat-ready aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in early 2018. Currently, 3 aircraft are being tested at Boeing Field (KBFI) in Seattle. I've modified the FS9 and FSX default AFCADs to accommodate the aircraft and made some simple flight plans that enable test circuits. This is the FSX KBFI with the 3 parked tankers:
All of the tanker models have animated booms that deploy when the aircraft is flying between 17,000 and 23,00 feet. This is purely a test at low altitude with an inappropriate F-15E from Lakenheath:
The Italian Air Force currently have 4 KC-767A's. This one is the newly painted 100th Anniversary aircraft of 14° Stormo:
The 4 Italian aircraft are based at Pratica Di Mare, just south of Rome and in the screen shot, the models are using Giorgio's FS9 Air Show scenery, without the display aircraft and modified to work in FSX:
The JASDF operates 4 E-767 AWAC aircraft from Hamamatsu, Japan:
Here are 3 of them in Brent Newman's existing scenery:
I'm grateful to Kevin who helped me to get the radome to rotate at the real-world 6 RPM after take-off (above 500 ft in the model), with some pretty tricky xml code.
The JASDF also operates 4 KC-767J tankers. Here they are in Brent's scenery of Nagoya:
I need to give a big thank you to Brent for providing the flight plans and call signs for the Japanese models. He has also gone one step further and provided refuelling tanker tracks that user's can have fun with trying to intercept and mock refuel. This is Brent's prize screen shot of him completing a successful intercept:
All of the models have a great deal of animation including complex flap, slat, spoiler arrangements:
Everything is packaged and documented for FS9 and FSX. I just want to do some final tests in the next couple of days and I'll send the files for upload.

Fantastic job John.
The right credits for the Pratica scenery go to John Stinstrom and Timbob. I've "just" re-done the AFD

John, you ever thought about commercial AI?

As usual first class John, as Peter says above "Don't you ever sleep," well stay awake lol.

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
Great ! Very good news !
Thanks a lot for this surprise John.
For the FSX KBFI scenery, is it the Original default FSX scenery or a custom scenery ? If is it a custom, where can we find it ? Thanks
FS9 need a good KBFI scenery... it's poor

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
1. Nope, no interest in commercial AI.
2. The FSX KBI screen shot is default scenery. FS9 default KBFI is indeed poor, but I haven't found a better one.
3. Yep, usually get 7 hours+ sleep a night. I just like early mornings for designing when it's quiet and occasionally evenings before 10pm. The bit in the middle is quite varied - garden, dog walking, DIY, cooking and AI designing. Speed comes from knowing the process, repeated practice and doing one project at a time with as few distractions and diversions as possible while really enjoying what I'm doing.

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
Oh my God?! Seriously a 767?! Amazing! Hopefully it could also be used as a regular 767?! The Aardvark one has served us nicely over the years but this looks like a gracious replacement!

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
Wow! They look amazing, capturing the fat-eel look of the 76!
One question; Is there a working drogue tanker among them?
Looking forward to this one

The answer is in the original post :
FS9 doesn't permiss to refuel in the air. So it's only visual. (I don't know for FSX)John Young wrote: All of the tanker models have animated booms that deploy when the aircraft is flying between 17,000 and 23,00 feet.

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
If you want to refuel in the air to this AI model with a pilotable aircraft, you can use this module :

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
Although the KC-46A and KC-767A's have wing pods, I didn't make the drogue hoses and funnels this time. I did that on the RAF Victor but there are 3 disadvantages:
- you can't unwind the hoses, they have to flash to the deployed position when triggered at altitude.
- the trailing length of the hoses count towards the aircraft parking radius, which makes the parking spots very large.
- they just add to the polygon count because the hoses need to be made up of a number of abutted cylinders to give a smooth sagging curve when deployed.
I think you will find refuelling on the deployable booms tricky enough in any case.
On the question of a commercial B-767 model, I have no real interest in doing that. I don't want to push it too far with potential user uncertainties of being able to paint a wide variety of schemes using the mapping in place for the military versions. I would want to avoid potential distractions of "could I do this and could I do that, please", 6 months after releasing a commercial model. I can see that happening with, for example, a request for a natural metal reflective texture on the lower fuselage and under wings. Possible, but time consuming with separate FS9 and FSX models and 7 LODs in each. It's knowing when to stop that keeps me going, if you see what I mean.

Re: Boeing 767 Military Derivatives
Sorry, I meant "drogue" as apposed to "boom". For my TA-4k home cockpit I need a drogue tanker
Like this; Lago VC-10, from their 'Tornado' package.
I understand the no real fuel transfer limitation, just for giggles in my sim
@John, I did extending drogues once on a 707 model... can't remember how I did it though! I animated the drogue extention with gear, so it always had the hoses out in multiplayer... that was a lot of haircuts ago!
**edit, John, I must have been posting at the same time as your reply! Understand the issues with a drogue/basket implementation, no sweat
