RAF Centenary

Post by Firebird »

I am surprised that nobody mentioned before but this Tuesday the RAF will be having a 100 aircraft flypast in Central London to commemorate its centenary. Yeah I know that its actually a couple of months late.

It will be its biggest flypast since VE day.

The route and types participating can be found here https://secretldn.com/raf100-flypast-london-route-map/.

I think 22 Typhoons are planned to be in the formation, but the star for me will be at least one F-35B Lighting. I plan to be under the route with a camera.

Yep you are right. One of the BBC presenters went up in one for one of the practice runs. Lucky girl!

As it is coming to Heathrow I think I will stay put and see it here.

Forgive the quality, but the flypast was a little too far away for my 300mm lens, which is pretty naff anyway, but it was good to record 22 Typhoons in a "100" formation:

What I really wanted to see though are the UK F-35B's, having recently made and painted them. I was pleased that 3/4 of the present UK based examples were present in the formation:

Such a crowd of Typhoons was a great sight, and such a rare opportunity. Good, too, to see nine Tornadoes up together. Can't believe their time is up soon.

At Heathrow the fast jets came straight down 27R which I was standing next to.

We saw the trainer and helo jobbies go well to the south of Heathrow on the way to Basingstoke whilst the heavy iron made runs parallel to 27L to the south of the airport.

The noise of 22 Tiffs was quite something.
