Searching forums for attachments

Post by jimrodger »

Probably me, but.....

Trying to search for attachments within the forums returns not found even tho' the file is definitely there.

Is there a special technique, not meant to happen or is it an oopsie?

You're trying a search on the attachment file name?

That doesn't work, simply because the attachment isn't stored in the post, so it isn't indexed by the search engine. (The attachment is stored in a separate table with a reference to the post ID).

Greg, thanks for that reply....

Is there any way to make the atachments more useable?
There must be dozens of useful files available that people don't know about, and are never discovered unless you happen upon them.

No not really. Remember that many also use the attachments system to show images so there are currently 7911 attachments in the system. Many of them have a completely random file name like 10.jpg, so even if I created a module that lists all 7911 attachments, you would often not even know what the file is about.

One of the reasons why we created the download hangar was to give the community a space to share files without having to use the attachments system, but that doesn't take away that there are still hundreds of useful files buried deep within the forums...
