Blackhawk Lazy Turns

Post by bvanhout »

Hi All,

I have created flightplans for Colombian Blackhawks.
Everything seems to be working well, except the UH60's make very lazy turns when maneouvering around corners on the ground, to the extent that they end up right off the taxiways and runway at times.
Is there a way to rectify this issue?
Is it an AFD or an aircraft problem?
Other aircraft operate without this issue.

Thank you

Well it is difficult to say w/o seeing the afcad but one thing does come to mind. If you have a long straight between nodes then the aircraft will speed up to their maximum taxispeed.

One thing that you can do is to put extra nodes before a corner at intervals. If you follow an aircraft using the traffictoolbox you will notice that aircraft do slow as they approach a node but if the only node is a corner node it may not be enough to slow the aircraft down to make the turn. This is especially true if you have narrow taxiways.

The other thing that could help create the problem is that if you have increased the default taxispeed then the likelihood of the problem appearing is increased.

Thanks Steve.

It is a pure heli AFD so I reduced the width of the taxiways. I will increase them again, as they are not visible, and try it again.

Much appreciated

Update:
I increased the width of taxiways (3 widths 20,30 and 50ft) and added additional nodes before the corners.
Although the was a slight improvement with the 20ft taxiway, there has been no significant improvement with the heli's taxiing all over the show in an attempt to turn the corners.
Next I will try other heli's that operate normally (remain on taxiway) with other heli AFD's.

Is that the only location that you get this problem with H-60s? What about NS Norfolk, for instance?

Update:
The AW139 remains on the taxiways of the AFD file I created for the helis at SKTI.
I went to KNGU and not an H60 in sight. In fact apart from the default, there is no AFD file.
The flightplans refer to 1NGU, 2NGU and 3NGU, but I couldn't find these anywhere in Matrix NA or Global Waypoints.
I found an MAIW FS9 package for KNGU and updated the AFD files to P3Dv4, now NS Norfolk is full of H60's and Ospreys but the H60's still make lazy turns.
I replaced the H60 at SKTI with the Pavehawk, but it is also lazy in the turn.
Is there a parameter that can be changed in the aircraft.cfg to adjust the turn radius?

Does anybody else have this issue in P3D?

The aircraft works fine in FS9 and there are a couple of parms that work differently in FSX but I have not heard of this issue before. Although I can see why it might possibly be this way as P3D is a more realistic flight engine and it could be that some aspects have filtered down to the P3D AI engine.

What I think the problem might be is the fact that it is a tail-wheeled aircraft and only the tail wheel currently allows for the steer angle to alter direction. However the tail wheel does allow for 90 deg alteration.
The unfortunate thing is that I do not have P3D and I did not write the fde.

What I can suggest is that you try increasing the steer angle for two forward wheels from 0 to say 30 to see if that helps/remedies the situation. The two forward wheel will not actually steer but the model may will.
Unfortunately I can't check.
The parm the eighth one for those two contact points. The third one being currently at 90. I would suggest taking a copy of the aircraft.cfg file before mincing around with it though.

The other thing to try is moving the tail wheel further forward, or the main wheels closer together, but not to the point where the aircraft tips over.

Update:
I increased the angle on the front wheels, but with little success.
I will try the other options

I have not seen this behavior in P3Dv4 yet, but will check and update.
