CFS2 to FSX

Post by ConcordeBOAF »

Hi all,
Recently I used a HEX-editor to convert the CFS2 I-153 to FSX. I updated the CFG, changed the Air file and it comes up in the selection area of FSX. However, when I click on it theres no aircraft there. Just an empty space. How do I fix this?

As far as I know you can't use a hex editor to convert a CFS2 plane to FSX.
From what I remember a lot of CFS2 planes don't work in FS9.

If you were amending the mdl type to an FSX one that simply will not work. If it did we would not have a small and dedicated team spending so much time converting aircraft.

An FS9 mdl and its animations have to be all modified and exported using MCX and the FSX SDK, i.e. compiled for FSX.

I don't even know if it is possible to convert CFS2 mdls this way. Somebody else may.

I think I have said this before but please believe this.
So many smart people have spent so many years coming up with complicated and ingenious ways to over come limitations of the FS world. If there was a simple option to achieve something then they would use it and you would know about it.

An interesting article and I can see why you might think that it was a tutorial for a guaranteed conversion but it really does not work that way. He basically changes the mdl type name.

Over the years we have had people have problems converting CFS2 aircraft to FS9 and had issues. FSX is a different ball game and the compiler uses a different set of standards from FS9. Taking the simple stuff gear and wheels needed to be converted from the FS9 standard to FSX standard before compiling.

Now some FS9 mdls will work in FSX. Some CFS2 mdls will work in FS9. This does not mean that all CFS2 mdls will work in FSX by altering their header. In fact, I would suggest that they are less likely to work as FSX thinks they are compiled for FSX and expects them to conform to the standard.

My guess is that the author got lucky with one plane. Believe me if this actually worked everybody would know about this technique and would be using it to save themselves months of work.

This leads me onto another question. Some FS2004 aircraft show in the aircraft menu but no model shows? Why?

That one I will have to leave to people with better knowledge of using FSX.

In order to see the aircraft in the FSX aircraft selection dialog a panel folder must exist in the aircraft folder.

What I was trying to say is that in FSX all aircraft with a panel folder will show in the FSX selection menu.

If an aircraft is actually visible there (the spinning display) depends on that it is a valid model.

If the box does not show an aircraft, you won't see it in the sim either.

From mobile hence short

Cheers,
Martin
