Re: Thoughts on the next project

The E-2C's/D's tick all the right boxes. I can include the Greyhounds too - there appear to be 31 of significance, 20 at Norfolk and 11 at North Island on the west coast of the USA.

Brent has confirmed that it's his scenery of Norfolk that I have and I have that working in all 3 sim versions. John Stinstrom produced North Island for FS9 that also works in FSX, but not P3Dv4, but users may be able to run that through MCX themselves to get something useful. I'll worry about Point Mugu later.

As for the aircraft themselves, they consist of small numbers in 12 squadrons. That hopefully gives variety and interest in paint schemes once I start researching them. I can also give Brent a present of the Japanese examples (with 4 bladed props I think) and the other export users too are possibilities if there is somewhere to place them.

I'm happy to give this a go. It certainly fills a big hole, the scenery is largely there, modelling is interesting and it doesn't involve a tedious "factory" process numbering up similar paints like the F-35's. We might even achieve a "wet" FDE if Steve could give me a hand with that once I have a model to work with.

Before that I need to finish the Jet Provost and Strikemaster packages, so it's back to numbering up the New Zealand and Saudi examples for now.

Let me know when you get to that stage and I will happily oblige.
On this aspect alone, you need to thing about which carrier models are available or you could get sidetracked into that side of things.

The same carrier scenarios as in the F-35C packages could be used.

I made a scenery of Point Mugu awhile ago and it has the parking for the Hawkeyes. It's already in the Hanger, but I can improve on it if you need me to.

If you do these, John, I have already modified and edited Iwakuni to line up with the photoreal background that comes with P3Dv4. The only thing I can’t do is move your harbour to align with that background.

jetrange, thanks for your post. Your Point Mugu scenery is great for FSX and, having just tested it, P3Dv4 as well. I don't think you can easily recompile for FS9 so at the moment FS9 users will probably need to use the default scenery, but I'll think about that again later.

Tim, thanks for the advice of your re-alignment of Iwakuni. I don't want to get too far ahead at the moment because I still have the Jet Provosts to finish, but I can return to Iwakuni later.

I've converted the Scenery file (not the CVX) for my personnal use. I can share it here if the original author is OK.

Indeed, John. I don’t particularly want to get sidetracked from Finningley, either, but I threw that in the mix as it appeared to be relevant. Given that Matrix is aimed at P3Dv4 users, this update is appropriate for that in any case, as the existing MAIW Iwakuni doesn’t align with the P3Dv4 world.

This Naval Aviation fan is pleased to read about the E-2/C-2 project. I need to research, but when I was onboard the boat, our E-2 squadron only had 4 Hawkeyes on (pretty big footprint even with wings folded), of course this could change as even the Growler squadrons have added airframes. Sadly, the C-2 will be retro soon.

Yes indeed Chris, I've just read that the usual on-board number is 4. That's not to say that there are not 1 or more in excess of that back at base. The training squadron, VAW-120 at Norfolk, I think has 12.

I'm not totally clear when the C-2 retires. I have seen references to both 2024 and 2026. Either way, it's probably worth doing.

Just been looking at the retro fit of refuelling probes to the E-2D's. I'll include that in the mix of models so the number sporting one can be grown as time goes on.

I also modified the ADE file for John Stinstrom's FSX scenery for North Island. It includes a lot more parking for the Seahawk squadrons, Berry Aviation, VR-57, USCBP, and VRC-30; the C-2 Squadron. There is also parking for other aircraft that visit North Island. I can let you have the file for the package. And I can let anyone share my Point Mugu scenery.

Thanks Jetrange.

Steve sent me your FS9 files for Point Mugu and they look great in the sim. So that means we have all the scenery covered for Norfolk and Point Mugu for all 3 sim versions. Would you care to upload the FS9 version (it's only two files since the MAIW Global Object Libraries include the libraries you have used) or should I include them in the C-2/E-2 package when I get to that stage?

I could also include your re-worked North Island AFCAD if you want to do that. I'm sure John wouldn't mind that.

Looking forward to making a start. Nearly there with the Jet provosts and Strikemasters.

Sorry to correct the above but the scenery I sent John was from Jetmax not Jetrange. Easy enough to confuse the two.
Not least would be Jetrange wondering when he did that FS9 scenery.

Ah, sorry about that. Thanks then to Jetmax and a diversion of question 1 - would you care to upload the FS9 version or should I include them in the C-2/E-2 package when I get to that stage please?

Might as well include it in the package to keep things as simple as possible.

Japan actually operates both older E-2C and brand new E-2D aircraft. The E-2Ds started delivery in the first quarter of 2019. There are currently 13 E-2C and 2 E-2D with 17 more E-2D on order.

Thanks Brent. I can make both types. I'll need the serial numbers later, but hold fire for the moment until I have something to paint.
