BAC Jet Provost T4 The Macaws

Post by Tranquil »

BAC Jet Provost T.4 / The Display Team was originally named The Magistrates for the 1965-1967 seasons but changed their name to The Macaws in late 1967. This name was constructed from the first letters of the Unit, MAnby College of Air Warfare.

Originally wearing a standard silver and dayglo training colours for their first season, but for their debut season, in 1968, the display aircraft were re-sprayed into a unique colour scheme of light grey and red.

From 1969 the Jet Provosts adopted the now-standard red/white/grey scheme but had special team markings applied. The "Macaws" flew six basic formations, their display culminating in a "Petal Break", or flat bomb-burst towards the crowd.

During the 1971 and 1972 display seasons the team was led by Flt Lt Brian Hoskins, and he later went on to lead the RAF "Red Arrows".

They look great! I met Brian many times over my career - a fine chap. He introduced me to several strange and dangerous cocktails in the Officers' Mess bar in Akrotiri when he was Station Commander. I was aware of his Reds history, but not the Macaws bit.

Jet Provost mk5 / Fly Aviation UK / Construction Number PAC/W/23907, ex RAF Serial: XS230 is actually the prototype T.5. It was built as the penultimate Jet Provost T.4 for the RAF, but it was retained by BAC and converted on the production line to T.5 specification.

It first flew from Warton on 28th February 1967, and was issued to the Empire Test Pilots School based at Boscombe Down later that year. Its stay with the unit only lasted a year, before moving onto the strength of Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment, also based at Boscombe, in June 1968.

It remained in service with the MoD at the Wiltshire base for the next 25 years, making its last military flight on 14th July 1993, before being officially retired in 1994.

It was entered in the November 1994 Sothebys auction and was hammered down to its new owner Tom Moloney, founder of the Transair Pilot Shop, for £22,000. Registered on the civilian aircraft register as G-BVWF, XS230 was ferried to its new home at North Weald in early 1995. It was then given an overhaul by Gosh That's Aviation Ltd.

Next it was flown to Gloucestershire Airport for a complete strip down and re-finish by Meg Air, and returned to North Weald in June resplendent in its 'factory fresh' Boscombe Down raspberry ripple scheme. In 1996 Tom formed the "Transair Jet Provost Duo" with Bob Thompson, using XS230, now re-registered as G-VIVM, and Bob's Jet Provost T.5A XW422 (G-BWEB).

The team was seen at numerous air-shows throughout the 1996 and 1997 seasons, before Tom and Bob "traded in" the Jet Provosts for two Strikemasters, prior to the 1998 season.

Tom Moloney sold the aircraft to Georgio Clementi, owner of the International Test Pilots School based at Cranfield. It was later operated from BAe Woodford and Coventry Airport before returning to North Weald in August 2000. Placed in store, and offered for sale, G-VIVM was bought by Ken Lyndon-Dykes in late 2001, who continued to base the aircraft at North Weald.

Jet Provost T.5 / Linton Blades / RAF Linton On Ouse / 1973 / No.1 Flying Training School (1FTS)

1963-69 seasons
Based at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in Yorkshire, 1FTS formed the "Gin-Four" in 1963, flying four Jet Provost T Mk 4s. The team continued to fly displays for the next six years under this name, but in 1969, the team's last season it was renamed "Linton GIN". The name "GIN" originates from the initials of three of its founder members, and the alcoholic drink! At the end of the 1969 season the team disbanded.

1970-1973 seasons
When 1 FTS re-equipped with the Mk 5 Jet Provost, pilots of the Unit formed a new team, christened "The Blades". They flew four aircraft in standard training colours, augmented by a large white Rose of York surmounted by two crossed swords on the engine intakes.
A small change to the markings was made for the 1972 season, when the white rose gave way to a large yellow sword painted vertically on the rudder.
The 1973 paint scheme retained the normal red and white training markings, but with the top of the fuselage and fin painted dark blue. The team lasted only until June 1973, when it disbanded.

Jet Provost T3A / XN459/G-BWOT / "The Red Pelicans" (1962) / Kennet Aviation (2018)

In 1962 from the Royal Air Force Central Flying School based at Kemble Airbase formed the Red Pelicans aerobatic display team, flying on four standard painted Jet Provost T Mk4 planes and equipped with white smoke generators. The team was the successor of the CFS team The Pelicans formed in 1960.

The next year the planes received bright red color scheme and extended to six. In this formation the Red Pelicans performed abroad in Belgium and France. In 1964 the team becomes an RAF official aerobatic team replacing the Firebirds and performing at the airshows in Belgium, France, Netherlands and Norway.

At the end of 1964 season the Red Pelicans performed together with The Yellowjacks.

In 1965 after the creation of The Red Arrows, the teams planes where reduced to four and repainted in white-red standard color scheme, while the smoke system was removed. The Red Pelicans were disbanded in 1973.

XN459 now resides at North Weald with Kennet Aviation.

Much thanks
