Microsoft blocking account Windows 11

Post by VulcanDriver »

My friend has a new laptop with W11 on it. I set her up with an outlook account. However it keeps being blocked for "spam or breaking the terms & conditions". She is not.

Can someone tell me why its doing this and more importantly how to prevent it.

Her location according to MS is in the US not UK

TIA
John

Is the outlook account a hotmail account or a genuine account created in Office or O365?

The reason I am asking is normally it is tied to your Windows 11 login. It could very well be that this is the problem. The system is detecting that you are trying to login to a different MS account to the one you have for the PC.

If this is the case try looking at this page :- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/off ... n-us&ad=us You may be able to unblock it there.

Hi Steve it's a new account created via the Microsoft outlook client.

I'll see the lady concerned Tuesday afternoon and try that. She used the same login details for her Microsoft account.

That seems a bit weird.
To be able to login to Windows 11 you need a Microsoft account to do that. If she already 11 installed she had an MS account. The fact that you created a new account with the same password would not be the cause. If something is trying to access the account with the wrong password that would be enough for it to lock.
The normal cause of this would be a mail app with the wrong password or wrong access details.

I did read online that some people had problems like this when they had to switch their Samsung storage to OneDrive, via their phone or tablets, and there was some files there that the MS automatic system does not like and it bans them. I doubt that this is the case here from what you say.

I would try accessing it online first to see whether the account is blocked or whether the app is blocking it.
If the page with the link doesn't work then I would try creating a new account and accessing it online before trying to access it by any desktop app. See if that works. If it does then then try adding it to Outlook.

She has Windows 11 home edition. The Pro version doesn't need Microsoft Account to login. It's also blocked her recovery phone number. After going around in circles she's taken it to computer shop where she lives hopefully they can fix it.

Very weird. I would be interested to know what caused that, and what you do to fix it.

Spoke to her just now and her laptop is stopping her from loging in as MS have locked everything. Never seen this before.

Its a brand new Samsung Laptop.

I don't see how how that could be if the outlook account you setup was different from her ms login account. They are not connected, unless somehow when you set it up in Outlook it tried to alter her default account to the new one and it got all screwed up.
If that was the case then it could be locked due to password violations.

Can she access either email account via the outlook.com website?

No sorry its not via outlook. She accesses using the Edge browser. I did find a Microsoft account in the name of her late husband. He used outlook for his business but not on her laptop. Tried to delete it but couldn't due to W11 security. I'm hoping the local computer shop knows of a method to circumvent the security.
