What I intend to do is get my FS9 up and running in its complete mode, time it and then transfer the whole thing to the SSD. I won't do that on a clean system, I want a heavily modified one. That is a real world test that might interest people.
Steve,

I think you will be very happy with your SSD. I am running a heavily loaded FS9 off an SSD on my new PC workstation that I built and it only takes a few seconds to load. I'll be very interested to see the results of your before and after load time comparison.

First off, I've moved this thread to this forum, better place for it. Secondly I've stuck this thread to the top of the forum because this is a very valuable discussion.

Here are some quick test results I've just done by making a copy of the FS9/Aircraft folder and naming the main folder "Aircraft_Standby". I've left three files in the new Aircraft folder, the default C-172, the current aircraft that is part of my "last flight" file and the Aircraft.cfg file.

From a fresh reboot of the computer:

Time to load to the FS9 selection screen in Windowed mode: 18 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Time to load to a new location (not the one already stored, Nellis AFB was used as a test with the MAIW scenery installed and active): 1:15

After closing FS9 and trying again:

Time to load to the FS9 selection screen in Windowed mode: 10 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :drink:
Time to load to the current stored scenery location: 13 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing I have done is to preface all my aircraft files with either AI(All AI aircraft), DEF(All default aircraft), FLY(Flyable aircraft), MAIW(As delivered in packages), WOAI(As delivered in packages).

This means that when I am trying to track down a scenery fault and don't want loads of AI flyiang around, or just checking out a particular AI problem, I can shift unwanted aircraft files easily into a spare folder (D:\FS2004\BACKUPS\AIRCRAFT). Traffic files are easier as I just shift them into D:\FS2004\BACKUPS\TRAFFIC. This is easily done if you use a dual pane file manager (currently using "xplorer2". Shifting multiple folders within the same drive is usually fairly quick and once done makes searching out those pesky scenery/traffic/model/paint problems much quicker.

If you're not bothered about seeing the AI in the Aircraft selection screen, there's a sure fire way of speeding up the initial load of FS9 use the "BBQ hide AI" utility on all the AI folders.

    http://library.avsim.net/search.php?Sea ... &Go=Search

also can use FS aircraft typer. (sorry don't have linky for that one.

    Hi Rob,

Although very helpful, this will speed up the loading of the aircraft selection screen when creating a new flight, not the initial loading of FS9. :smt001

Does that actual help the loading time of FS9 generally or just loading of the aircraft selection window?

You can place all aircraft "new and retro" in one aircraft folder and just change the "Traffic" files

I think you're missing the point, Tony... :D

This is about speeding up the initial loading of FS9 (the actual programme, not a flight).

Yes Greg, i know and agree with some of the thoughts... but this is in response to having several Aircraft folders... :)

Sorry to have confused matters. As I've been using the afore mentioned program for a long time, and don't suffer with poor load times I thought it may prove useful. Although I have alot of AI, clearly not as much as some on here that's it's causing me issues of the same magnitude.

    Hi Rob

Don't worry, if you hang around here for very long you will finish up with so much AI that you will forget just what you have loaded. Then you will need a separate box for the Retro stuff, and all of a sudden it spirals out of control.

    Its fun though :D :D
