Same reason that the F-2 got rid of the traditional F-16 canopy and put in a reinforced forward windscreen... bird strikes. Big bird strikes in specific. The F-2 replaced the F-1 as the JASDFs primary low altitude strike and anti-shipping aircraft. Large sea bird impacts being a serious concern in that role.

For the P-1, the Japanese went with a different design theory path than the Americans did with the P-8. The P-8 represents a fundamental shift in ASW operations with an aircraft optimized for operations at medium altitudes with wings, engines, sensors and weapons delivery profiles optimized for that new operational theory. The P-1 on the other hand represents modernization of technology to continue the mission of the P-3. If you look at the P-1 in comparison to the P-8, it has a straighter, thicker wing optimized for low altitude low speed flight. It is also reportedly a more agile aircraft with gigantic windows for low altitude observation. The P-1 retaining a MAD boom while the P-8 no longer has one being another design choice pointing to the different philosophies regarding ASW tactics.

That's a long way of saying that the P-1 will be expected to spend a lot more time on the deck than the P-8, so bird strikes are a bigger concern.

The Japanese are apparently continuing an old P-3 tradition in the P-1. Using all four engines to sprint at high speed to the patrol area then throttling back two of them to improve loiter time once on station.

Also of note, the P-1 does not have provision for in-flight refueling. But then again, the P-3 never did either.

Sound convincing! And yes I saw the size of this windows there is a picture of P-1 and P-8 next to it, it's really big :D

My first Ops Officer at RAF Coningsby got an MBE for an endurance flight in a Shackleton. He was telling me how they did it and the fact that they went down to 1 engine at a low fuel weight.

The FS9 versions of the P-1 are all done, including the LODs.

There are 4 models. The Clean versions have folding steps that retract into the fuselage, while those armed with missiles, don't. That's purely to save on draw calls and to give variety:

One model is Harpoon equipped:

The other one is the TRDI P-1 test aircraft that carries an ASM-1C + Harpoon as in the photograph posted previously:

This is the XP-1 test aircraft (01) operated by TRDI, in this case, in a clean configuration:

The models have a wealth of animation, including flaps, slats, spoilers and thrust reversers:

The 2 test aircraft plus 8 P-1s of 3 and 51 Kokutai are destined for Atsugi. Brent has been working on the scenery and set up there and will be posting some shots in his thread shortly. Next job for me is to make the FSX versions.

And mated it with a P-3 Orion.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

I finished the conversion to FSX native code this morning and with Dxt5 textures, the paintwork looks even better:

Because FSX Nav lights don't come on 15 minutes prior to departure, as they do in FS9, I was fearing that the absence of that trigger would have meant dispensing with the folding animation on the steps and having to resort to an instant on/off display. Adding the steps in FS9 was a double dog dare from Brent and I just had to complete the challenge in FSX too.

Luckily however, the delay between powering up and moving forward to taxi is slightly longer in FSX than in FS9. That just gives enough time to retract the steps in time before the aircraft moves off, so I was able to retain the animation without the use of the Nav light trigger.

Brent has done a great job with the Atsugi scenery, which I have tried in FS9 and FSX. This accommodates the P-1s but a host of other new features too.

Just need to write a short manual for the P-1s for inclusion in the combined package and I'm about done with this one.

The P-1s are all done and dusted and are included in the new Atsugi update package that has just been sent to the Download Hangar (see Brent's Japanese Bases topic).

Thanks for the new P-1 and updated Atsugi scenery/AI. Is there any chance of someone updating the US Navy hornets at Atsugi? Since the original Atsugi package was released a few squadrons left Atsugi and a few new ones arrived.
