Over at this site someone said that the route these planes fly is from New York to California to Hawaii to Guam to Christchurch then to Antarctica (this was posted in 2014). They didn't say where in California they stop at.

Also I read that they only stay on the ground a hour when in Greenland so nothing freezes.

We used to overnight at Thule. The hangars are heated, including the floors - though there is a funny story about one hangar sinking after they discovered the floor wasn't sufficiently insulated so it melted the permafrost under the hangar!

Is it reasonable to assume that only one aircraft at a time visits the Antarctic camps? If that's the case, wouldn't a user flyable aircraft be better than setting up AI?

As for Antarctic scenery, some will be needed or the AI will be operating in a featureless white void. There is some good pay-ware stuff available, but I'm not really eager to have a go myself.

It would be good though to have the Ski-birds operating in snow. Thoughts welcome on the best scenario.

The flights are indeed around 2000nm each way, 5 hours by C-17 or 7 in a herk. I will look into how many airframes are deployed (the season is about to kick off, so I might pop out to the airport and ask... can't hurt) and see if I can get some idea of the frequency of flights etc. They often have a bird in maintenance in Christchurch at the Air NZ Engineering facility (Hangar 1 at the North end of the field for those playing along at home)

Scenery for McMurdo/Williams Field is pretty tricky in FS9, but shouldn't be too hard in FSX/P3D.

Let me see what I can find out about flights etc and I'll post it here

For Christchurch scenery,

From what I can remember the FS9 scenery did have the hanger in your photo. The P3D scenery has it.

Thanks for those links. I've downloaded and set up the FS9 scenery and it does indeed include the hangar. However, although it is attributed to an author, I just can't find the AFCAD file anywhere. The readme is pretty much gobbledegook and doesn't help. I'm not really inclined to pay 27 Euro for the P3Dv4 scenery, just for this project, so I'll try and find another solution.

Unfortunately the runway is about the only bit that aligns with the scenery

Aircraft park and taxi in middle of buildings etc.

The AFCAD is apparently for V5 of the scenery, which I think I have installed, but the two together is a mess. I won't spend more time on it now, but I'll come back shortly and have another go.

Ok, since NZCH is my 'specialist subject' so to speak.... let me put together a package of the best airport for FS9. The ones listed were by Ian Warren, and are not that accurate. There was a huge Christchurch photoreal project years ago which had a quite good, though now outdated NZCH, with the correct Antarctic Program buildings etc.

I'll dig it out tonight and report back.

Just read 7 of 10 of the LC-130s have completed the NP2k prop conversion, along with a few USN Hercs now that funding was approved. Also, FAF 1st KC-130J delivered!

Yeah, I spotted an article in Flight International a few months back that said that all the legacy Herks remaining in US service would be getting the 8 blades and new engines.
Apparently the RTAF has also signed up for the upgrade.

NZCH Scenery Update:
The best scenery (At least in my opinion) was produced by a team of locals, lead by John Haines. I have wrapped up the scenery adn uploaded it to my webserver, and have sought permission to re-distribute it.
There are two packages;
- One which covers a huge area of Canterbury, centered on Christchurch City, with photo texture, hand placed autogen and hand coloured night-lighting.
- The second/smaller version which is just the airport, cut from the main package above.

Once I get permission to distribute I will publish links

Thanks Sean, very helpful. I'm assuming this is for FS9, but do we know how the scenery fares in FSX and P3Dv4 please?

Just a quick update with where I am. I'm just adding the last two areas of Schenectady County Airport (I decided to go the whole hog). That should be done today or tomorrow. I then have to make the flight plans for the LC-130H's and test everything in the 3 sim versions.

Actually, I was thinking about a patrolling security police vehicle to go with the fire engines and ambulances. I'll finish everything else first though and perhaps come back to that before I put the project to bed.
