We already have a - though not up-to-date - version for FS9 and FSX in the download center, John.

I take the task to update those, and add a P3D version.

That will be a big step forward Martin, thank you. I think that there are 11 libraries in the Matrix list that are not in the MAIW FS9 and FSX Global Object Libraries. Updating what is there already and creating a P3D global library would be really useful.

Re: Brian Clarke's Scenries

We always had the issue with global sceneries vs. regional sceneries, the later ones made specifically for one or few airports.

From my point of view they should bestreiten the same. That would make the handling way easier. Often objects from regional libraries are nevertheless used on another airport because it fits.

Would you be okay for your regional libraries to be made global, John?
Cheers,
Martin

I haven't created any libraries, regional or global Martin, if you were asking me that is.

Could you just help my understanding please? What is the scope of the libraries converted for use in Matrix for P3D and is that greater than those contained in the current FS9 and FSX Global Objects libraries? If it is, as suggested by your list, then presumably, there is permission to convert for P3D.

Re: Brian Clarke's Scenries

Post by John Young »

Thanks Martin, the Matrix list is surprisingly comprehensive.

The libraries from me are small add-ons and fixes, sometimes for other peoples' scenery. I have no problem with them being in Matrix. My big scenery projects (the ACG ones for example), don't use libraries, but placed objects directly in ADE.

So, if we have permission to convert all those libraries for Matrix for use in P3D, can not the most popular ones be included in the Global Object Libraries, rather than scenery designers having to ask non-Matrix users to dig them out? Does it make any difference what vehicle is used to obtain them, they have been converted for MAIW members to use in P3D? I'm not sure what can happen for FS9 and FSX though if the permissions are specifically for P3D.

The reason I'm asking this is because I want to make use (recommend) one of Brian's sceneries for my next project, but I need to advise users on how to get it working in all 3 sim versions. I wouldn't be happy to recommend digging them out of Matrix, it would be too complex for many users. I could, alternatively, ask users to dig out the FS9 versions of the libraries and get them to convert them themselves. That's also quite daunting for some people. Simplicity is a Global Object Library as we have found for the current FS9 and FSX ones.

Many thanks, Henk. Although helpless with aircraft conversions, this I can do very well, even with animated things like Marks excavators.

A big package with "regional" libraries won't be possible.

Unfortunately, not everyone in this hobby is as open minded and especially in our early days, devs were very protective about their work. Very few scenery object designers gave us carte blanche to do with their libraries as we saw fit.

I think I explained this before some years ago behind the scenes and our position hasn't changed since it's not up to us to change it. Our global libraries package started with some object libraries from John Stinstrom that he designed to be used globally, so at any airport. I remember him being quite picky about which libraries qualified as "global" and which did not. For his many sceneries, he also created libraries that were specifically designed for a certain place. Those did not qualify as "global" even though later many other devs started placing objects of those scenery specific libraries on their own airfield creations. The NAF Atsugi library is such a typical example.

I completely understand what you're all asking. It has always been cumbersome to get the Atsugi library from the NAF Atsugi MAIW package just for one or two objects that are used in another scenery. And with 3 different sims with different SDK compilers the issue has tripled. It would be so much easier if we could just zip all the libraries up in another big library package, or add them to the current global libraries package. This however, would go against John's design principles. Since we completely lost contact with him, it now is what it is.

The reason that I did include them in Matrix, recompiled for P3Dv4, is that we see the Matrix regions as big MAIW packages since they were initially just big compilations of smaller MAIW packages. The scenery specific libraries are still only distributed with their specific sceneries in an MAIW package, respecting the designer's wishes. The libraries are not altered except recompilation with another SDK and we don't place these objects on other airfields than the intended ones. A side effect for Matrix users is that by installing the regions, the objects do show up on other sceneries that make use of them. However, this is never our primary intention (nor do we try to prevent it since John didn't prevent it either in FS9).

I realise that is not what you want to hear and that the devs who use these libraries in their own sceneries are not always aware of the complications. Trust me that we've had many staff discussions about this and it always comes down to respecting the dev's wishes. For us it would be the same as zipping all JYAI aircraft up in one big package and marketing it as a mega AI aircraft pack without ever consulting with John Young. It is simply not done.

Re: Brian Clarke's Scenries

I think I've got that Greg.

The permissions to convert the libraries to P3D code were granted on the basis that the primary use would not change, ie they would be used to draw the same scenery, but in a different sim version.

I think I understand the side effect too, but as I'm not a Matrix user I'm not sure. Does anything in Matrix stop a scenery designer pointing ADE at the Matrix libraries (effectively global object libraries) and placing the objects, so long as they are not geo-locked od course?

Does that then make life even easier for users of that scenery, so long as they are a Matrix user? They wouldn't need to download anything to see it, because Matrix has everything that might be needed readily installed.

To keep within the spirit of the permissions, I won't be recommending this route, but if it is feasible, does the Matrix documentation discourage library use in this way?

Yes indeed John, your first assumption is correct.

Nothing prevents scenery designers from pointing to objects from the libraries in the Matrix regions. That is simply not feasible or we would have to geolock every library indeed. But like I said, nor did John Stinstrom prevent it back in the FS9 days. Scenery designers who pointed to objects from any libraries not included in the global libraries packages were, as far as I know, always aware of the fact that their users would have to hunt for all the required libraries. It is/was their choice to point to those libraries anyway, just like it is your choice now to advise your users to download such scenery. As much as I would like to make it easier for your users, our hands are tied here by legacy permissions.

Matrix users do have an advantage indeed, since the "side effect" also applies to any other scenery installed outside Matrix. If that scenery requires the NAF Atsugi library, they would no longer need to download and convert it from elsewhere since Matrix already provides it. But the same goes for FS9 users who already have the libraries installed because they have the original scenery, as long as that scenery sits lower in the scenery library hierarchy.

Thanks Greg, just as I thought.
