Virtual Base visit and spotting @ RAF Mildenhall

Post by viper810 »

I made some screens of a basevisit and spotting at Mildenhall like reallife.

First i had a short basevisit on Mildenhall through all ramps and parking spots.

Then i had the oppertunity to make a few show of a few taxing aircraft like this AC-130

The basevisit was over and i moved outside behind the fence at rwy29

Thats a great set, and a good idea to make it a virtual visit and then take shots from where people do it in real life

One thing it shows to me is how surround fencing makes a big difference to scenery enhancements. Kudos to those that add it as it I know that it can be a pain to do correctly, but it really does make it look like a base rather than just scenery.

What a great story from an awesome base rendition. Those shots from over the fence are really cool, makes me want to get in the car a drive down to the base. :D

Thanks for sharing.

I love the shot with the three aircraft coming down over the trees.

There are some beautiful shots in there! Well done.

One thing I can't figure out has to do with the first shot of the Wisconsin ANG KC-135 and the fancy painted Michigan ANG KC-135 model. In those shots, that's one of the lower LOD models being rendered, you can see the fuse is not as round and the cockpit windows are different (lower level of detail). Somehow you've tricked the LOD system into letting you see one of the lower level of detail models up close like that. Weird.

Also what set of textures are you using for those taxiway signs? They look a lot better than the ones I have.

Yes thats right. On larger distance LOD make the plane a but uglier. I used DBS W&F for this. With mobile tower you don't have this LOD problem because it use a different kind of zoom.
But with mobile tower you can't use different hights.

The textures are from REX. Taxiway marking: Scuffed is the name.

The way I understand the LOD system, it's based on the model's width in pixels as it is displayed on the screen. Did you blow those pictures up in size by chance from a much larger one that showed the model further away??

Great series of shots and very much like all the photo sites I visit. Those PR ANG C-130's are a long way from home.

Neato!

Not trying to be too picky though, but are some of the numbers on the aircraft noses backwards?
