F-14's Fltplans

Post by Dman »

First off.. Great job on the Tomcat sunset package. I finally have some traffic (besides me) at Oceana.

I was wondering if someone could produce a training Traffic file for the F-14's to Alphasims BigE (off of Norfolk) and/or the Eisenhower (CVN 69).

Again Thank you for putting your time and efforts into this hobby

Derek welcome to our forums. I'm sure someone already has cooked something up that they would be willing to share with you. Hopefully they'll offer something up soon. Just a word of caution however, those particular AI F-14s are not meant to be used on a carrier for takeoffs and landings, the FDE is not set up correctly for that. There is a version in development that may be able to do carrier style operations. Keep your fingers crossed.

Derek,
Thanks for the kind words. It sure was fun to beta this package with the release of Nick's Tomcat.

I'm assuming that you're wanting the Tomcat to land on the carrier?
If so, I'm afraid no one that I know has quite mastered the art of building an FDE file for any aircraft which will allow it to land on the carrier.

But then again, you never know what is lurking at MAIW's skunkworks.

thanks for the quick replys..Even if the Tomcats would do touch and go's I'd be happy. But I'm happy now with Oceana having the tomcats on the properity.

You guys totally rock! :smt109 Looking forward to the Top Gun package.. Maybe we can get a few more Oceana flight plans when this happens :smt018

No AI that land on a carrier?
I must assume then, that you have never seen Abacus Flight Deck 4, Flight Deck 5, Vietnam Carrier Ops, WWII Carrier Ops, Carrier Strike Force or AlphaSim Big E or Kuznetsof packages?
ALL of these have AI that land on carriers! (done by me of course) :D

I guess I'm a little new at AI.. I haven't figured out how to port FD5 AI to take off from KNTU, or the other carriers. I know very little on how to make fltplans..

Great work by the way on those add ons

Sorry to say that I haven't. I'm not a payware kinda guy...LOL.

But, if you'd like to develope something for Nick's F14's...well.... :D

Lightning is quite right, the ability to do AI carrier landings has been around for some time, and it works very well. If I understand the capability correctly , the AI aircraft modified in this way can't make a conventional landing. So this AI can only ever do 'traps', be at on land or to a carrier.

I haven't purchased any of those payware sets either, can anyone confirm whether they realistically portray carrier ops, i.e. angle decks with separate cats and traps? Or do they still have a single 'runway', with the AI launching off the angle deck, but not off the bow cat?

I have a couple of them, ie, FD4, Alphasim Enterprise and almost all of the freeware. They all take off and land on the angle deck. The afcads used for the free carriers performs about the same as the payware. There is however an FDE file that will make carrier landings (in carrier or land) that is not a payware, you would have to check for it in Avsim or Flightsim for it. It was essentially done for the Alphasim acfts, (A-6, F14,S-3) but it will work on almost anything. So. if you have Nicks F14, replace the .air file with the carrier file and viola! deck landings, havin in mind that it will do very short landings anywhere.

I haven't messed with this yet myself, but there are files on avsim/flightsim that add trap and catapult and a gauge to the a/c. A friend has done so, using a short field on land to practice, but I haven't any idea whether or not it will work on AI.

As an easy temp solution, you could flightplan IFR TNG on a carrier, the a/c will not actually touch down, just make a low approach, then go around. With a little manipulation of the airfield (carrier) elevation and pattern altitude, you might get it pretty close to touchdown, so the a/c could fly out of Oceana, bolter at the carrier and return.

Guys, before this thread goes too far down a particular path, I should say that there is plans for an MAIW Carrier package built around the F14.

Yes they will land and takeoff from the Carriers, and there will be a special fde that will enable this to be done. The limitation will be that you either operate from a Carrier with the 'Wet' fde or from land with the 'Dry' fde.

Hopefully this won't be too much of a hardship for most AI enthusiasts.

Now I know that the Top Gun package is easily awaited, and some may think that surely we will end up with near enough double the true number of Tomcats. Well we have thought of this, and there is a cunningly simple plan that we have devised to avoid this happening. I won't go into it now, but when the Top Gun package is released you will probably be able to work it out :D .

Oh, and to answer the next question - no this isn't a release schedule yet  .

But at least we know that something special is coming our way in the not too distant future. Fantastic!

I'd be happy to help Nick / group with the "Wet" version of the F-14.
I have done combo AI for both land and carrier ops, both in the same folder.
Wet model needs a separate model (tail hook, wing fold etc.) but can share the same texture folders.
No need for completely separate flight model, as the "Trap" function can be in a separate ".air" file and the aircraft.cfg can handle both.
Nick can contact me anytime, if he is interested.
I can help with the carrier Afcads as well if needed.
Even though I do a lot of payware, I have no problems with helping out the freeware community. (carr2006.zip.....15000+ downloads)

No that won't work.
AI are a completely different beast from user type aircraft.

Hi,

Sorry to rekindle the subject.
I have been working for a long time on carrier landings in FS2002. I only managed to have them land nicely, brake fast and almost come to a full stop. But then they speeded up again and did not taxi to their parking spot. Several people then told me I would better stop trying because FS2002 would not allow this knd of behaviour of AI. But they all sent me fs2004 suggestions which I now still have to try out. But the main difference between carrier AI and normal AI was:
- spoiler settings in aircraft.cfg at 1000
- thrust scalar higher than 1 up to 4 depending on aircraft (for catapult launch mimicking, I gather)
- lower weight
- braking strength in air file at max.
- 'playing' with roll, lift and drag settings a.o.
a
And a good start for tweaking could be the Nemai1 cfg and air files that I found on AVSIM.
