Does anyone know of a scenery that launches fake SAM missiles up at you??? I am also looking for scenery that contains burning military equipment or buildings to simulate post strike targets in an Iraq type environment. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!!! I found some stuff here, but you have to pay for a membership to their site to download the stuff
Adam, I don't know of any off the top of my head, that would be cool. I've thought about making objects like this but I'm not sure how to do it since you can't attach effects to scenery objects in FSDS. An example would be that Shuttle launch package that Nick Needham created some time ago. Not sure how he figured it out but I know that it was very specific about the timing of the whole thing. So I'm not sure that even the method he used would work. I'm sure it's possible somehow, just not sure how it could be done.
Hey thanks Mike! I know there has got to be options out there I just can't find them... look at this video by Dman at about 4:23... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKdFY5aC ... annel_page He's got some descent smoke effects coming from that city... it would be cool to create a scene similar to what was seen in the first Gulf War of all the burning oil field around Kuwait. I've just searched everywhere I normally do (Avsim/Flightsim/Simviation and haven't come up with anything. Maybe I'm just not searching for the right thing. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks Guys,

There ought to be a way... There's at least one download I've seen that has a nuclear bomb effect. I know that I used to have an aircraft-crash effect - fl into the ground and the plane would be on fire, smoking, etc.
I'm about ---->l l<---- this close to just paying to join their site and downloading the stuff. In addition to SAMs they have AAA, Blast and smoke effects, and moving and static enemy units among other things... It's pretty tempting, but I am curious about the actual quality of the stuff. The concept has me by the tail none the less.

I think that Apocalypse Now 2004/apocalypsenow04.zip on avsim may give you some idea of what is possible with some work/effort. Way past my abilities to produce and I haven't seen many sceneries like this, but it's something along the lines of the OP's idea - minus the missile flight aspect.
I have a library of target objects and I've created my own fire and smoke effects to use with our packages. There's nothing fancy about them so you are more than welcome to use them. In addition, I have a library of Humvee vehicles that have so far been used very sparingly in our packages and I've recently added M1A1 Abrams tanks to the library. Those are static but there are models that have moving turrets.
So I have some things you might find useful, just no actual moving SAM's.
EDIT: I just had a look at their site. Their scenery is a bit too basic for my tastes but I suppose that it is better than having nothing at all. Worthy of paying for though?
Now that is what I'm talking about... it is in FSX however and so I don't know if it would be possible to create something like this in FS9... but WOW! Watch it all the way through.... it gets damn good.

That is THE video that made me start the favorite FS videos thread in the MISC forum. That author is on a different level. I've also read a little bit where he explains how he made that video. Lots of multiplay involved and many of the effects are timed. For example, shooting that F-18 and having it explode is a carefully timed effect that is attached to the F-18. So they have to fly in multiplayer and shoot at the F-18 at just the right time till the effect shows up. Takes a whole lot of work.
I still didn't see any SAMs coming up, everything else I saw is doable with effects. You should download the MS Effects SDK and make your own. They give you an example effect, which just happens to be forest fire effect with flames and smoke. Heck you could use that and with some very minor mods have all kinds of different smoke and fire effects.
I love the AAA effects that he did. It is all inspiring, I am going to dig into that SDK as soon as I get a chance and start learning more about how to do this.
The effects are not that hard. When I took a look at them, I realized that most effects are just modifications of the default ones that come with the sim. Just a lot of trial and error and rebooting of the sim to check your changes out.
