FSX Tyndall AFB area rework (in progress)

Post by Ford Friendly »

I assigned the "runway repair airfield" the previously unused ICAO code - ZPAM. Here's the fruits of the weekend's work thus far.

Default (on my system with addon landclass products)

My version about 3/4 done relandclassing

The Google view (obviously, a partial view, just that area between ZPAM and KPAM)

Surprisingly, I couldn't just designate a huge swath as some sort of forest and let it go at that. Didn't look right. There ARE settled areas, beach areas, and other types of areas that needed identification and designation. Still have to finish object placement in the ZPAM area, do some road construction and that sort of thing. SBuilderX rocks.

That looks good FF. What add-on landclass products are you using?

SBuilderX and I switch back and forth between satellite views from Yahoo and Google to determine what to landclass what areas.

Still a work in progress, but much more "accurate" (though not perfect) than the MS Default landclass, UTX USA, the FSGenesis landclass or the Scenery Tech product. I guess "hand landclassing" wil be more accurate 99% of the time, but it takes a lot of freaking work to do a small area jsutice and you can still tell it's not accurate because various landclasses don't fade into each other very well ---- straight lines really ARE the marks of manmade designs, not Mother Nature. :o

Thanks for the comments.

As most of you know, it always seems the last 5% of a "project" takes most of your time and attention. (I think business people call this the 80-20 rule.. but I was never good at math! :o ) So, this may take a bit of time to actually finish detailing (just like a good car wash.

Rather than "abuse" the MAIW Tyndall package thread... Also because a friend who lurks in these forums sent me a rather scathing (though somewhat tongue-in-cheek, I hope) email ranting about my "arrogance discussing (my)your afcad without bothering to show what the h*** you're talking about"....

Here's a modified-for-FS9 version of my highly-personalized-fit-only-for-my-setup afcad for KPAM. It's important to note that I did not match up/modify the wingspan/aircraft parking radius entries with FS9-standards. I leave that up to you.

What I've done is strictly limited to showing parking areas, accurate taxi-apron-runway layouts according to the available satellite pics (Google Earth/Yahoo sat/MS Virtual Earth). I did throw in 3 MIL_CARGO parking spots not shown on any satellite photo - for the stray transient humongous mother.

There's room left to add maybe 20 more parking spots if you want to be accurate according to the pics. I leave that up to you.

You also might want to take a look at/modifying/coordinating your aircraft.cfg atc_parking_codes and atc_parking_types entries with this afcad for best results. I use QF4 rather than ATRS, for example. Without coordinating that, parking looks a bit "rough" in terms of "grouping".

As mentioned in the MAIW Tyndall package thread, I think that any afcad for Tyndall works best if you download the freeware update for the Alphasim Tyndall scenery package on avsim.com, decompile it and create an object library using the included models, then place them yourself using something like Instant Scenery/Whisplacer. Definitely makes a world of difference, looks-wise.

Offered "as-is" without support. Modify to your heart's content. If modified for further distribution, PLEASE do not give any public attribution to me. (Yeah, I know - I'm weird.)

The file does seem to have gone AWOL from avsim.

Try http://www.combatfs.com/index.php?loc=d ... ileID=8014

or

http://www.fswarbirds.com/index.php?pag ... ileID=8014

or
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/index.php?l ... ileID=8014

Ford

Edited to add: I do not have the "required" Alphasim FS9 Tyndall AFB scenery. So, I get a couple of black textured mdls.. and didn't include them when I made my own library bgl from the fix.zip's files.
