USAF AI F-4's

This is the list i'm working from just now, as requested in the thread about my RAF FGR 2's. I'll do as many as I can (when apropriate models come out, eg RF-4), and the list can be extended

:

F-4C:
401TFW at Torrejon, Spain with tailcode 'TJ'
81TFS/52TFW at Spangdahlem, Germany with code 'SP'

RF-4C: 10TRW at RAF Alconbury, UK with code 'AR'
26TRW at Zweibrucken, Germany with code 'ZS'

F-4D:
36TFW at Bitburg, Germany with code 'BT'
48TFW at RAF Lakenheath, UK with code 'LN'
50TFW at Hahn, Germany with code 'HR'
52TFW at Spangdahlem, Germany with code 'SP'
81TFW at RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge with code 'WR'
86TFW at Ramstein, Germany with code 'RS'

F-4E:
525 TFS 36TFW at Bitburg, Germany with code 'BT'
50TFW at Hahn, Germany with code 'HR'
32TFS at Soesterburg, Netherlands with code 'CR'

And this is my first go at an F-4D in Europe One cammo, I dont think the colours match the markings, but this is basically just showing cammo/colours.

32nd TFS used to have the tailcode CR instead of CJ

Saw them flying for many years,

Igorski - when you take a break from these superb paints, would you please, please put togther a pixel-by-pixel tutorial of how to go about painting these birds. In the meantime keep up the excellent work.

Those SEA F-4Cs bring back happy memories for me. Can't wait to get 'em flying in the UK airspace once more!

I'll be sure to keep you all updated as to how these are progressing..

I'm actually going to have to spend a lot of time researching USAF units because unlike the RAF ones, I havn't got a clue about USAF ones!!

If you join up at the forums on my own website I'll be more then happy to help out, I have something of a tutorial written up which I can put up, but its just a basic 'first draft' so you'll probably have lots of questions!

The tail-codes I gave you are the 'wing codes' - to make your life a whole lot easier!

CR - not CJ

- of course it was

When tail-codes were first introduced (can't remember when - late '60's I think) they were allocated to each squadron, Hence the 81TFW at Woodbridge/Bentwaters had the codes WR WS and WT. I think Alconbury had AR AS and AT if I remember correctly. Wing (or Base) codes were adopted in the early seventies, each squadron having a different colour stripe on the top of the fin (Please correct me if I am wrong anybody!!)

If you try to paint them all you'll be painting Phantoms for the next couple of years

Incidentally, I only ever saw USAF F-4's in the UK in the SEA schemes you painted.

I'm going to be a wizz at USAF codes by the end of this I can see!

I'll cencentrate on the ones listed, and the SEA colours, but I might find an excuse to use the other two solour schemes as well

I remember seeing a 26th TRW RF-4C at the Mildenhall Air Fete in 1987 in this scheme, but some aircraft, especially on the 52nd TFW, they were painted in the Europe 1 scheme, which basically just replaced the tan with a dark grey. I think most of the 26th went straight to grey, whereas the 10th TRW at Alconbury had a few in the Europe 1 style.

1987! I'm amazed they were still using that scheme. I was thinking of 1968 IIRC! I think they replaced the RF-101s.

Yep tis true, they did - albeit with lo-viz national markings, just to spoil things
