Some Mods taking place at KSTL
Here is an email exchange with a friend who works at Boeing. Big changes at KSTL including the Boeing area and the Missouri ANG.
Hi Mike,
I went through KSTL returning from houston on Monday. I noted that
the Boeing name is not on the facade of the Assembly Building, the
small fighter hangars are gone, and there is a large black building
with the Boeing name on it. On the ANG ramp there were some temporary
'bubble' hangars.
### Darn, Marv, I woulda waved at ya if I knew you was there....
1. Is the assembly building just getting a new paint job?
### The old assembly bldg no longer belongs to McBoeing. We sold it to
the City.
2. Are there no parking slots/hangars for F-15 or F-18 assembly or
awaiting delivery?
### If you're looking at the old building, they're way over to your
right in a new set of buildings.
3. Do you work in the big black building?
### No, I'm in the clump of buildings I described in answer #2.
4. Are those bubbles in the Guard area just temporary?
### Yep. The MOANG unit is being dismantled as a result of the last
BRAC. The F-15s will end up as part of 2 other ANG units in other
states, with all the pilots and ground crew going in many different
directions that are NOT the same as the F-15s.

Huh I was just there not too long ago myself. We always taxi right by the guard ramp on the way into our gate. Always liked seeing the F-15s sitting there. The had the best callsigns, usually some kind of Anheiser Busch product (beer).
Bud 51, Mic 51, etc.
Yea that unit is being absorbed into the B-2's at Whiteman AFB. All part of this BRAC stuff where they are integrating guard units into active duty units even into aircraft like the B-2.

Mike said they offered the assembly building to the Guard and initially it was all set up for them to move over there. They needed to move because of the proximity of their buildings and the American Maintenance hanger to the flight path for the new runway. BRAC vetoed that. The assembly building was sold to the city. He did not say what it will be used for. He also didn't say where the F-15s would be moving. I suppose the IL ANG F-16s will assume some of the AD responsibility for anti terrorist flights now. I have never had a lot of faith in BRAC decisions. Usually takes many years for the changes to result in any savings and those savings are usually offset by payments they make to 'save' jobs or stabilize the loss of the military asset. Gets even worse when you want to reopen something. For example trying to find locations for bed-down of a new airplane. The states that gain airbases don't want to give them back and the cost of building a new one is astronomical.

I thought I had heard something about that unit moving over to Scott AFB for the time being.

That would be a relatively short move but it would be into Illinois. That is possible I suppose-but they would become a part of the Illinois ANG in that case. Scott has traditionally been an AMC base or MAC base. They did have F-86s there in the 60s. Went on a tour and did a couple of ROTC trips out of there.MIKE JG wrote:I thought I had heard something about that unit moving over to Scott AFB for the time being.

F-15's
I can say this right now. As I sit here at work they are going up to "Play" right now. Package of 5 and looks like some smurfs (training blue bombs) on the pylons, now where they plan to do that I have no idea. As far as moving our favorite 15's, last word I heard was a no go for now. Last week we had 4 Herc's at Lambert, again no clue why, but very rare sight. But I do remember the days of our F-4's and what a cool sight at PVA watch and feeling those babies take off. WOW. They are my favorite I have to say.

Haven't been there in a while (KSTL) but I understand the C-130s operate out of St Joe. KSTJ. I did an afcad for St Joe to add C-130 Parking and also some F-15 slots so I could do round robins with the F-15s. I have the Alphasim V2 for Whiteman but I have not checked the AFCAD. The original had A-10s on the Ramp and B-2s. The new one has B-2s. I guess it is time to review those AFCADs. Also did some parking at KOFF(Offutt) and KSUX(Sioux City) to set up some other destinations for AI. Provided slots for the IOWA and Illinois F-16s to use as destinations. But it is hard to keep up. The AFCADs are easy, the scenery sets are much more complex.
