Thank you very much
One more question.
What do you mean by making an FS9.exe?
I have made a file with the name FS9.exe but the FS9 path utility doesn't accept it. How do I make an FS9. exe?

Hi Juniboy,
From your description you did everything right. For the old WOAINS24 installer it is good enough to have a fake fs9.exe in the folder. But is is important to also create the folders:
* addon scenery
* addon\scenery\scenery
* addon scenery\texture
below the forlder containing fs9.exe.
The part with the FS9 path utility is important when you plan to install the newer MAIW packages, because they then can default to your target folder and you don't have to set that manually for every package.
I have tested the utility again and it works for me. What you have to do is:
* start FS9Path_Utility.exe
* enter the path with your fake fs9.exe in the 'Set new path' box (or chose it with the button)
* press the button 'Set FS9 path'
Then you should be done. Again, this trick is useful only for the new MAIW Installer packages.
Please test again and confirm if you get it going. I will then adapt the Tutorial to make this step clearer than it is now.

Thanks
Two more questions:
1. After I press the button " Set FS9 Path", I get warnings about it. Am I supposed to get the warnings?
2. After I convert the traffic files, I put the into scenery/WORLD/ scenery.
But I still don't get any traffic. Could you explain to me how I am supposed to get traffic to work because it is not working.
Thank You very much.

Sorry for my infrequent appearance - real life and an upcoming release are making things hard a bit.
There should not be any error message using the FS9 Path Utility. It would help to know what error message you get. What does it say exactly? since the keys are stored in the Local machine part of the registry you need administrative rights to change the path. You can check if the utility indeed did change something if you start starting regedit, navigate to the key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0 and check the path key.
As for the second part - basically by following the tutorial. It has been verified that it works. For you it does not so. So either you make an error during the process or your configuration is so different that some step in the process fails.
But we can only find out about this if you describe your steps and the results you get in each phase. You surely understand that I just can't find out what might have gone wrong otherwise.

Hi Martin
I'm experiencing the same problem as our friend Juniboy, so to clarify:
As directed by the tutorial, I have a dummy application file thus: C:\FS9\fs9.exe - plus the various FS9 subfolders created.
When FS9Path_Utility.exe (v1.1) loads, I navigate to and select C:\FS9 in ‘Set New Path’; then hit ‘Set FS9 Path’ button: On receiving message box “Are you sure you want to write this path to the registry? C:\FS9” I hit OK. Then receive message box “It appears the registry entry is blank or does not exist! (please also check that you have administrative access)” and hit OK. Next receive message box “The path your registry is reporting is: \fs9.exe This may not be correct, the fs9.exe file was not found there!”; I finish by hitting OK once more. I notice here that ‘Registry Key:’ has an entry thus: “SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\ (Entry = EXE Path)” – perhaps a clue?
I’m a sole user on Windows XP so administrator rights should not be an issue.
Appreciate your assistance - this has me well and truly stumped!

Hi Delboy,
It looks like the FS9 Registry repair tool is not doing what it should do, or at least not always. I will write a small replacement soon.
Since you have already made yourself comfortable with the registry, here is what you should do.
The Key we need to work with is:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator\9.0
The value we need to correct is the path to fs9.exe in 'EXE Path'.
This value must be the full path to fs9.exe, e.g. D:\FS-Test\fs9.exe
Will you get along with this description?

Hi once again Martin - thanks for speedy reply.
Have often perused registry, but have never had the confidence to add or make changes - that's obviously for those knowing what they are about.
In this instance, the only key in my registry similar to the one you quote is for ....\Flight Simulator\10.0
So, in answer to your question: No. I wouldn't know how to proceed following your description. I think I have to be treated as a simpleton when it comes to registry hacking.
I look forward to seeing a re-worked FS9Path_Utility in the fullness of time though.
Regards
Delboy

I was able to convert the first 25 scenery/AI packs as per Owls help in the tutorial...for FSX. Will the newer packs like the Apache one work if I put it in FSX directly??? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.

The simple answer is no. You will probably have to adjust them no matter what. Some packages more so then others. On the Apache package, I know the FSX and FS9 airports are quite different at KRDU. I had to adjust quite a bit to make the Rwy 14-32 in the package look correctly attached with taxiways to the FSX KRDU Rwy 5R-23 L.
In my case, I am also using Ultimate Terrain, and FSGenesis mesh. So always a challenge.

Oh ok, which one works the best for directly istalling into FSX without really messing up anything?

None. MAIW packages are for FS9
Short answer - follow the Owls Nest tutorial.
Longer answer - The installer looks for FS9 aircraft, scenery, addon scenery, etc folders. So you have to let the installer work into the false FS9 directory you have set up per Owls Nest instructions, and then manually move everything to the proper places in FSX. You will always have to convert the AI flightplans.bgl to work properly in FSX. Depending on the package, various afcads have to be converted to FSX format, and/or adjusted, as they were meant for FS9. Some work fine. The aircraft generally work okay, but some spinning prop textures have to be converted also with the Owls Nest utility that does that.
As you do these conversions over to FSX it gets easier the more you do. However, everybody has a different set up, so what works for some, may not work for you. The tutorial is a good road map to getting it done.

Attempting to convert MAIW_1-130th_avn

I guess I got really confuzzled, as apparently MAIW_1-130th_avn is not one of the packages that needs the WOAI installer. I still can't find an installer in the package, as all the exe file does is place the contents into a folder of your selection. Is that installing? If so, how do I convert this package into FSX in my Win Vista Ultimate?
In FS9, I "cheated" and placed two of the package helos on helo spots that I created for them at KCLT and created a flight plan which had them fly to created helo spots at KMYR at midnight Sunday and return to KCLT an hour later, thereby keeping them parked at KCLT the rest of the week.
I can't figure out which files to install/transfer and how to make these helos to appear in FSX. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I transferred the flyable C-17's and F-117's into FSX without a problem.

Yep that is its installation. It simply places them where you need them for FS9.
So for FSX you would install it to a completely separate test place and then copy them over to the relevant FSX folders. All this is covered in the Owls Nest instructions mentioned all over this thread.

Thank so much for a reply. If you are talking about Martin's MAIW FSX Installation Guide, I followed that; However, in attempting to use the WOAI Installer, I get an error using it: "Index was outside the boundry of the array" and when I get on their site, I get told that the WOAI installer is only used for the first 25 MAIW packages (which I did read) and that is why I am getting an error.
If you are talking about another method, I am old and probably missed that part (I did read the entire 11 pages though) and request you at least give me the page number which starts that discussion, so I can follow it from there. Thank you so much. Old retired pilots can't read too well anymore <smile> John

Yes

That is what his guide will tell you.

You have to realize that NO ONE on the staff uses or even has FSX installed.
