AIG Forums Re-Open:

We are very happy to welcome back all of our forum members and and we are very grateful indeed for all of the support we have received over the last few days. Please know that AIG is not giving up our part in the battle against pirates. We are continuing to protect our rights using all legal methods. Closing the forum was one part of our fight, not the whole strategy.

Why did AIG close its forums and web site ? Piracy has long been a blight across freeware and payware. Once we knew that AIG team members' work and other the work of freeware authors - such as AI Aardvark, The Fruit Stand, Globusworld and FSPainter - were included in an ICE AI Traffic distribution package, AIG spent 10 days of exhaustive effort to negotiate agreement with Salvador Gonzalez Velasco of ICE AI Traffic, whose response from the outset was simply to refer to lawyers and quote their flawed responses to us. On 19th September, Salvador Gonzalez Velasco called off discussions, announced that he intended to continue with releasing a package containing the work of AIG team members and other freeware authors without first seeking their permission and, further, that he reserved the right to slightly modify the work of AIG team members and then release it as entirely his own, without any credit being given to the original author.

As a team, we decided that we could not, in any case, continue releasing files whilst our control over their distribution remained in doubt. We also decided to close down so that Salvador Gonzalez Velasco and the community at large would understand what was at issue and, crucially, what is at risk.

What did this achieve ? Simply the strongest level of support across the whole AI community that we could have possibly hoped for – whether by e-mail messages to Salvador Gonzalez Velasco, comments on his blog, discussion of the issues in other AI and FS forums or messages of support on our Facebook page. We are very grateful to all of those who gave their support publicly or in private messages to us.

What is the situation now ? ICE AI Traffic have announced that they intend to release their package this month. We are confident that you will understand that we cannot discuss our tactics in open forum.

One thing must be very clear: the whole AIG team are determined to establish the principle that their work cannot be uploaded (other than to Avsim and Flightsim) without the individual permission of each author. This principle is enshrined in international law but, frankly, we have neither the resources nor the inclination to pursue such a complex matter through a series of international courts. As we have said elsewhere, many of us face such issues in our working lives. Our hobby should be an escape from this.

AIG’s position on this issue has not changed. There will be no further releases from AIG until this matter is resolved. The short to medium term risk to freeware AI remains as great as ever. What has changed is that we have re-opened our forums so that you can resume seeking support and advice on all the matters you normally use our forums for but also so that you can participate in the discussion in our forums, if you choose to do so.

Best regards

Matthew

Well I am going to take "their" ICE AI and redo it as FREEAI and release it...

See what they think of that!
