Understand replacing the F-5's, but why have 2 multi-role fighters, the current F-18 and now JAS-39?

I don't know for any 4th generation aircraft which is not multirole 8)

I might be wrong but I think the Swiss use the hornet in a strictly air to air role, at least that was the case a couple years ago

You are correct we have no real air to ground capability anymore since the retirement of the ageing Hawker Hunters.
However there are now tendencies to rethink the Air to Air only capability.
