IPad 2 ???

Got a nice Christmas bonus at work today, been thinking about getting an IPad 2 for a while now.
Anyone else have an Ipad 2? If so, which version do you have, 3G or just wi-fi? Also how much memory did you get?
There are some great real world pilot apps for it such as nav charts that make the thing incredibly useful for what I do.
My operations director at work claims that if the thing had a warm hole in it, he wouldn't need his wife any longer......

That would be to replace the oven, right?

Some people on my shift at work have iPads and some, like me, have the Galaxy 10.1.
What I would say is that both are good products and both serve the same function it really comes done to your choice. If you have an iPhone then the chances are you are going to gravitate to an iPad, same OS, where as if you have an Android phone you are likely to get the Galaxy, same OS.
If there are specialist apps that you need that are only on one system then that does have an advantage.
Me, I chose the Galaxy because I have an Android phone and I chose that because I didn't want a phone that the manufacturer controlled what I could do on it. I love it, and one person at work tested both types out side by side for a day. The main difference he noted was the bigger aspect ratio on the Galaxy that meant that widescreen films looked better. In the end he bought a Galaxy because he has an android phone and it's operation was therefore more natural to him.
They are really information conduits rather than full blown PC replacements. I don't use mine for work use, but I use it at work so I don't need more than WiFi. I don't carry it everywhere with me so I don't need 3G access, but if you got one then you would either need to get a separate contract or use your phone as a WiFi hotspot. I that case you would need to have a damn robust existing data contract plus the need to have both items on your person at the same time.

I borrowed a colleague's iPad for my last holiday in Asia and absolutely loved it. The advantages over a laptop are that it's much lighter and doesn't need to start up. Just push the "Home" button when you need to look something up et voilĂ ! Every night I planned the next day: look up routes, make reservations, check my flight status... all from my hotel bed
If you spend most of your time away at hotels and airports with free WiFi then you won't miss 3G. I'd suggest trying it without 3G first and if you notice that WiFi doesn't give you enough coverage you can still get a 3G contract with your provider.
If like me you have an iPhone then the choice is simple. iTunes will synchronise your music and apps on both devices so you only need one programme and all your mails/contacts/agendas/photos etcetera will be automatically synchronised between the two devices via the iCloud whenever you've got a WiFi/3G connection. Also many apps are for both iPhone and iPad so I could still use my old purchases.

I'm finally accepting the fact I might have to join the Apple crowd and get one. Tons of great aviation related apps and I hope the use of iPad's will be standard in my next aircraft, although I highly doubt the Army will issue me one. Our current "militarized" electronic kneeboard is pretty basic.

BA is issuing iPads to all its Cabin Crew. I have know idea why they need them, maybe it's to take their minds off striking.
As an Aadvantage member I know that AA will be making Galaxy Tabs available to Premium customers on their trips. I am assuming on Inter-Continental flights as I upgraded to First on MCO-DFW for $80. Well worth it, especially as your luggage is free.

Just being able to put Jepp Charts on the thing would remove 70 pounds of weight from our aircraft and free up a whole lot of space. If we could also put our weight and balance data, aircraft flight manual, MEL and status books etc on it, it would save another 30-40 pounds.
It's gonna happen eventually, there's no getting away from it now. However to use a tablet for Part 135 flying (versus Part 91) the certification process right now is a GIANT pain in the arse, too much work to make it worth the effort currently. We're hoping that will change and I'm sure it will in the future.
There's an incredible app called ForeFlight:

It does everything except fly the plane for you!
