Military AI Works

I was all set to have a go at an AI B-25 Mitchell a couple of years ago to add to the ACG Duxford scenery/AI package. However, before I could make a start, the aircraft that was resident there was sold to the USA where it now lives. I shelved the idea until a few weeks ago when I was at the Summer air show and was pleased to see a nice Dutch example in the flying display. I'm going to build that one, but since there are so many great paint scheme possibilities, I'm going to do a few more too. The Commemerative Air Force I think have 5 flying, then there's the Canadian "Grumpy" and Red Bull. I think I have 11 schemes in mind. That will need 5 models to give a variation of the glass nose (Medium Bomber) and the solid nose (Gunship) plus some variation of upper turret/no upper turret and fuselage gun packs/no gun packs.

I managed to pick up a copy of the Warpaint book of the aircraft and it has some great plans in it. I've built the single LOD FS9 model and did the FDE and flight testing this weekend. It's flying well as AI with some nice compression in the undercarriage. Here's the un-textured bomber model in Gmax:


Next job is to design the texture sheet and start the mapping. That's going to be interesting because some of the aircraft have a highly reflective polished airframe, while others are a drab green or sand/green, marine blue etc.

Hello, I am quite new on this Forum but I find it stunning what is going on here. Mitchell B-25 - this would offer a lot of possibilities to have Latin American B-25 of the 50ies to 70ies for various of those Air Forces - is there any intention to make such repaints? I am transforming my FS9 stepwise to 1960 including as much Military Aviation as possible and these WWII airplanes for this Region are very rare as AI as well as according repaints.

Anyway - what is already there and what is in the Pipeline is amazing - thanks to all who do this work.

Kalle, there are a lot of talented people here in all the skills of AI modelling and it's a really good group to be part of.

I have one Uruguan example (1959) in my B-25 Warpaint book that could be included in the pack as the 12th scheme. However, it's not very interesting as schemes go and I'd rather do another one that is currently flying. I will be including a paint kit though, so you can re-paint whatever "J" models you like if you felt inclined.

These two confused me until I spotted the obvious difference. Both carried the same squadron markings and nose art "Grumpy" for a while. The aircraft furthest in the shot was operated at Duxford until 2008. It's now based in Canada:
